Hi there. I started collecting old cameras a few years ago (as display) but along the way I picked up this camera at a yard sale. I joined this forum hoping someone might be able to tell me more about it, including it's value? The serial number is 161898 and there is an 'S' underneath leading me to believe this is a Asahi black body model 'S'?. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I'm not an expert on cameras from the 1950's other than perhaps personal use of a Box Brownie, however a Google search brought up this site that actually covers that serial number pertaining to..., as you believe, an Asahi Pentax S. There's quite a bit of history about them including an estimate of production numbers.
Hope that helps.

Welcome also. Wow, quite a find! I have a chrome S (it's my avatar) but considering that there were only fewer than 5,000 S models made in total, and a relatively small proportion of them being black, yours is really rare. The only difference between the S and the original AP was that the shutter speeds were re-aligned to what became the norm; 1/60, 1/125 etc rather than 1/50, 1/100 etc on the AP.

Value will depend on condition, and it appears to have been pretty well-used with some brassing (not necessarily a bad thing). Even so, it might be worth having it professionally CLA'd to bring it back to full operating spec. The lens on the front of the bellows unit appears to be a Super Takumar which is later (Spotmatic era) and would not have been its original lens, so it also might be worth tracking down an original pre-set 55mm/f2.2 or 58mm/f2.4 Takumar to go on the front of it.

The operating manual in the photo is for the SV/S1a models rather than the S. Whatever you do though, the black S is as rare as hens' teeth.

I bet that camera is in 'MINT' Condition. It's the poor Ipod Mini photo that's making it look like something the cat dragged in

Nice model to own
