Armistice Day Durham

For the past thirty years the east end of the Cathedral along with the WW1 memorial has been obscured by hoardings while the replacing of weathered stone work was carried out. It was removed a few weeks ago.

This ia an odd time for me each year, I used to be an army Cadet with the Mold Battalion ACF Royal Welch Fusiliers and it was whilst doing my bit as one of 4 on the Cenotaph similar to the above, that I realised I would not join the army.

It's a little bizarre, being one of four chosen to be on the Cenotaph is a real honour even as a cadet but it is also an saddening experience that makes you realise that you never want to be one of those honoured/ remembered.

Friends from my time as a Cadet have since fallen, RIP, I chose not to follow that path and as such they were all braver than myself - we need these people and should pay them more respect IMHO.

God rest the soles of all of our fallen service personnel.

Are thos WW1 uniforms please? My grandfather was a sniper during th first war and I always respect Armistice Day.

They are indeed WW1 uniforms.The group are called the Durham Pals and they are on facebook (I'm not)

We didn't get to any services this year and I am ashamed to say I've still not got round to buying a poppy.

We have a friend who's son is a Royal Marine, fortunately he came back safe from his stint in Afgahnistan, he was a medic and talks very little of what he saw, and like Stuey, not all of his friends were so lucky.

I am pretty good with PS but not that good. As I said in the comment above the first photo, the east end has had hoarding around for thirty years.
I thought Kris (Womble) might have left a comment, as he was at Durham Uni.

I must have seen a very similar image to that last one somewhere else then as thats the one that looked so very familiar.
