Arghhhhh!!!! Goodbye K10D

I suppose you can guess by the topic title I managed to drop my K10D

Whitby Goth Weekend in front of crowds of people (How embarrassing) Bottom plate on K10D smashed, focusing screen popped from housing, AF360FGZ smashed at hotshoe mount, but the worst and most soul destroying was the zoom on my cherished 16-50 DA* jamming up I managed to free it up and use it on my K5 but the pics were a bit fuzzy.

Insurance have agreed to replace the Flash and also the 16-50 which they say is also knackered , although personally I would have thought is could be repaired much cheaper than replacing it, annoying thing is they've offered to replace my K10D with a K50, looking at the specs I know the K50 is a worthwhile bit of kit but it lacks a top plate LCD and also wont take a battery grip, the cheap third party grip I had for my K10D packed in after it got rather wet last winter and I'd not got round to buying another but I do like a grip on my camera bodies.

Question for you guys is should I stick out for them to replace with a K5 or even K3 or is the K5O as easy to use even without the top plate LCD, assuming I could get to live without the grip.

Accept the offer (careful not to bite their hand off in the process).
Sell the K50.
Use the proceeds to buy another low mileage K10 (or K200 if you struggle to find one).
Pocket the difference.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Alan- it may be worth speaking to your insurance company and asking them whether they would be prepared to send you a cheque instead of replacing the items.

I put in a claim earlier this year for my K5, grip, lens and other bits and my insurer wanted to replace them from Warehouse Express but when asked, they agreed to settle by cheque instead

Looking at the price of the K50 - this would give you the funds to buy a mint used K5II or 5IIs

Good luck

Carl
No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

Although insurance companies can be reluctant, if you insist on a cash payment then that's what they have to do. A friend of mine was a bit too weak with them and they started sending him things - a Canon lens, Nikon body.....ridiculous stuff. That is, ridiculous in the sense none of it replaced his lost Olympus.

Go and wash your mouth out john, using such words in a Pentax forum Ha Ha Ha

Talking of insurance do people use a "dedicated" photography gear insurer or just added to the "household" insurance ?

Yes Stan I feel suitably shamed.....

Household insurance is usually quite reasonable.

Sorry to hear of your accident at Whitby Alan. Sounds like a good piece of advice to insist on cash rather than a replacement camera. Having said that the K50 would be a very good replacement camera. I believe its basically an updated K30. I have one of these and I love it, the images from it are a big improvement over anything I got out of the K10d. I agree it hasn't got the top screen or a grip facility but I never use a grip and found I can live without the top screen.
Best wishes, David

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Mine was covered under house insurance, always has been. They've already offered a cash settlement, unfortunately with my excess it would only cover a new lens and flashgun, think I may stick to my guns and point out their like for like replacement policy, I could probably get by without a grip but not without that top plate display, if they insist on a K50 then it'll be getting sold straight away.

I only had the K10D out cos' I'd forgot my charger and the K5 battery was on it's last legs, if it had been the K5 on the floor then a K3 wouldn't have been an issue.

Should have dropped the *istD I'd happily swap that for the K50

That's a sore one Alan, always a horrible feeling when something like this happens, I remember what I felt like when my few months old *istD got knocked of a table, happily me household insurer was true to their like for like policy.

As the K10D was the top of the range at release and if it's a like for like policy I would try and hold out for a K3 or even K3ii.
Cheers

Isn't the K3ii lacking a pop up flash?

That's a K3ii off the list then

How does it control a wireless flash off the hotshoe?

It doesn't, not on its own anyway. You'd have to use a second dedicated system flash on the camera, or go for a radio trigger device that is able to send a signal to your off -camera flash

I don't want to name them Stu in case it gets nasty, but I'll PM you.

If I do end up with a K50 can anyone tell me if the SDM contacts will supply power for power zoom lenses, I only ask because there's a neat little paragraph in my policy that basically means I can claim for loss of use of the lens
It's a pity I threw the old grip away too as I could have claimed for that
