AP First Look at K7

AP has published its First Look at the K7 - I've just finished reading it.

I suppose stung by accusations of Canon/Nikon bias, the wording of the article is so neutral and carefully worded that I could imagine I almost felt the pain of the writer. Poor Angela was given this task, but she does survive it fairly intact!

I think, but I could be wrong, that she likes the K7...

Will pick up a copy on Tuesday. I think AP produces some of the best and most reliable reviews available, certainly the best ones I've seen in print. I think they've also generally been very fair in their assessment of Pentax products.

If she does like the K7 it must be good .
She does not like much other than the very top end cameras.
I stopped having AP because of the bias, and the same old thing over and over, this camera verses that camera.
One mag has just done a hatchet job on the X70, bottom of the pile, I personally have not tried one but I know one or two seem ok with their X70's.

I have come to the conclusion that AP often IS biased, not just against Pentax, but also Olympus and others. The quality of articles, reviews and technical knowledge has all gone very downhill in the last few years. Angela has without doubt her own biases and seems often to be incapable of objective writing. I totally ignore their reviews these days. The young so-called technical writer is so often lacking basic knowledge it is painful and the lack of even cursory research is shocking.

I can't agree with that. AP always seem very good to me, although there signs they are gradually dumbing down to be more like the other magazines. But they seem to give more coverage to Pentax than others do, if you ask me.

I have stopped buying Amateur Photographer because of their obsession with Canon Nikon head to head tests
Switched to Photography Monthly now, this month you guessed it a Canon Nikon head to head-cant believe it

I buy "View Camera" magazine. Not a Canon in sight and only the odd Nikon lens...

I get Outdoor Photography which does ... photography, and whilst reviewing some cameras, it also reviews useful things like outdoor gear etc.

I like AP for some of its technical articles

I would suggest the two UK mags that do seem to still have good objective looks at gear are: British Journal Of Photography (BJP) and 'Professional Photography' magazine..

AP is a business. If the majority of their readership use Nikon or Canon then they must reflect that in their coverage. Plainly if you used Nikon or Canon products, their coverage would seem 'about right'.
If Pentax were covered as much, you could then argue that they were biased 'for' Pentax.
All reviews outside of the strictly scientific tests are matters of opinion and should be read as such.

My copy arrived yesterday morning and having read it I thought exactly the same as John, I think she actually likes this camera!

Strange that it doesn't carry over into computers. I rarely ever buy AP now because they exclusively use Apple Macs whilst I and 95% of their readers use PC's, so a tutorial on a Mac is of absolutely no use to me. Strange thing was that when they looked for the Best Raw Converter a few years back, The one that won wasn't available for the Mac This also suggests that they must use PC's as well in the AP office.

I suspect Apple supply free computers and pay quite large product placement fees to have their computers shown in the photo rags. Why else would a magazine only wish to appeal to a minority of computer users.

Before anybody says Macs are good computers, I don't doubt that, just as I don't doubt that Canon and Nikon are good cameras, it's just that I use a PC and Pentax and I don't buy the mag because they don't cater for me.

I don't think Apple supply any Macs to magazines or publishing houses for free, they just happen to be the default choice for the print industry and have been for some years, certainly since the late eighties when I qualified as a Graphic Designer.

The software in use at the time was Apple only, and if something isn't broke, why fix it?

You weren't trying to sell magazines though. Hasselblad has been the default choice camera for magazines since it first appeared, but it rarely gets featured in AP. Now digitals here I doubt if any magazines use 10M pixel cameras, but the photographic magazines still feature them.

If they aren't getting paid for using Macs, their even dafter than I thought. The average beginner with a digital camera and a PC can't even transfer the pictures over without struggling, so how they are supposed to follow whats going on on a Mac is beyond me.

There are plenty books published on Photoshop/Elements for the PC, so if they can do it why not magazines.

Pentax have used product placement in a few "How to" magazines and DeWalt seem to be the main supplier of tools to DIY magazines, even though they are expensive.

Not long ago Berghaus seemed to be worn by 99% of outside TV reporters, I find it hard to believe that everybody actually paid for Berghaus jackets.
