Any ideas what this lens is?

Now that the auction has ended,
Anybody know what this is?
Looks like some sort of small range zoom with the beauty ring possibly missing.
Cannot believe it is a prime, but maybe you know better?
Just curious really, I only bid up to £15.

I think it's a smc Pentax-A 35-70mm 1:3.5 zoom.

The tapering depth of field lines would indicate a zoom lens.
It looks like it has 70 engraved on it, so maybe a 35-70.

Pentax also offered a few variants of this lens without SMC coating, but those all seem to have a red button on the aperture ring rather than a black one. Have a look at the K Mount Site under non-SMC zooms if interested - I think they were mechanically and optically identical aside from the coatings.

Mannesty seems to have the right one. The name ring has probably come off.

Went for about the right price considering it's incomplete.

I prefer the constant f/4 model possibly slightly
sharper even though it has one less element.

You'd have thought the seller would have tried to work out what he had before the sale started! Oh well, a bargain for someone. EDIT - actually £20 is a bit high for one of these, let alone one with bits missing, I got the F version in mint condition for a few quid more

I think it's time for Pentax to close up shop when people start saying that £20 is too much for an Excellent little Pentax Zoom Lens.

Well, I think it is, for a 'broken' one!

The older zooms often seem to go cheap. I know I found an M 35-70mm (absolute cracker of a lens, fast, sharp, only minus is the weight of the thing) for £15 a while ago. Ok, it's a bit scruffy but the optics are mint and it works perfectly.

I understand the hesitation over older zooms. Zoom technology has vastly improved. Many older zooms are just nowhere near the quality of newer ones. Yes, exceptions exist. But even good optics can be bothersome on Pentax SR cameras -- what focal length to tell the SR'bot? Best to use them on a bright day, fast shutter, SR off.

I treasure some old MF primes. Vivitar-Kiron Series 1 70-210/3.5, and 80-200/4.5. Sears-Tokina 55-135/3.5. Sears-Samyang 70-210/4 and 80-200/4 aren't bad (also labeled as Albinar, Lentar, etc); neither is Takumar-A 70-200/4. Those without fixed max apertures are usually not quite so good; they can be VERY cheap, and worth every centavo. Neither my Takumar-A 28-80/3.5-4.5 nor SMC-M 40-80/2.8-4 were acceptable, and my SMC-A 35-80/4-5.6 is a dog unless it is mount-reversed.

I still have mine for the MX, great lens, combined with the M 24-35/3.5 and Pentax-A 70-210mm f4 it covers 90% of the needs on my film kit and all take 58mm filters.
