Ant macros with the new DS

After reading a post by Mike-P on some hand held macros using a bellows.
I decided to have a go myself using my newly acquired ist*DS, A bellows and an old SMC Takumar 50mm 1.8

These ants were my first target, only about 3 or 4mm long and crawling around on top of a cinder block wall.

Nice, I can't seem to do ants .. my lighting is just too harsh even with a diffuser.

I don't think he had been drinking but was giving me a warning to stand clear.

Get yourself an AF200T flash, it a great flash to use manualy, it can be wound down as low as 1/8 discharge and with a diffuser its perfect.

I think dodge is selling one in classifieds.

Would the AF280T be the same apart from being able to swivel etc?

Excellent, well done, especially with the first one. They look as though they could give you a bit of a nip!

I think though that one of your first jobs to do with your new DS is to give its sensor a thorough cleaning, it's a bit grubby by the look of it.

Definately looks like it, I've noticed it quite often, especially with bees.

Anyway I think these shot are a bit naff the DOF is terrible the new istDS is rubbish a jam jar bottom could produce better shots than the Takumar You will also gather I am insanely jealous that Clarky has managed to get so near to these little varmits and capture them so well

PS: I hope they bit him

Thanks Guys,
Dan I noticed the sensor, its filthy and i'm on it
These little guys were so tiny I doubt you would feel a bite from one.

Its a nifty setup the DS with bellows and Flash bracket, feels very balanced in the hands. I will post a pic of it later.

Excellent macros Clarky - the little guy in the second one looks like he's used to posing for cameras.

I struggle to capture ants successfully, a shame as I find them one of the most fascinating of all the insects. Perhaps I should put out some sugar as bait next year..?

Great shots Clarky, especially as they tend not to stay still for any length of time
C&C welcome.

They are difficult to capture, I just focused the camera on a particular spot where they were tracking and waited for one of them to stop moving

Not 100% sure Mike I would expect it would have the same manual controls as the 200T but would be considerably heavier and more powerful.

Heres a couple of shots of my latest rig.
The bellows is an old Novaflex I picked up for a buck, it had its camera mount missing so I converted it to a K mount.
