Another ruddy lens

Sigh, you got it eh? I was sitting in front of my PC watching that up to about 5 minutes before the end, then my darling wife decided she needed me to do something immediately

I got up from the PC thinking oh well, it doesn't matter, the price is going to go up at least £200 in the next 5 minutes. I was pretty shocked by the final price!

I think you would have been pretty shocked by the condition when it arrived as well

Nope, no front or rear caps, couple of small nicks in the front element, brassing of the aperture ring, scratches to the body, some deep scratches round the front where the filter screws in.

I felt quite sorry for him when it first arrived as he charged me £7.50 postage and when it arrived it had cost him £22.50. Not so much once I opened it though.

That's a real pity ... By the way, it happens I own a good copy of this lens but lacking of the hood and original case (and still waiting for the tripod ring to arrive from ebay), please send me a PM with a fair offer for those accessories

The nicks in the front element may not make much difference. I have a 28mm with a few scuffs/scrapes to the coating on the front element that still seems to perform well. It may object to certain lighting conditions, but I've not noticed any flare or similar problems yet. Given that it cost about a third of the price of a mint example I'm happy. Just wish I could find an original Pentax front cap for it at a sane price - I'm not paying the £7 asked by one infamous ebay shop, given that I found one for £2 a month ago!

However, if the seller failed to mention these faults when you bought the lens I really feel you should ask for a refund. My 28mm was sold with a full and frank list of its flaws, which is how it should be.

Well I contacted the seller and he seemed pretty reasonable (probably trying to make sure he protected his 100% feedback). He said he would take it back or give a partial refund, I pointed out that it would cost another £21 to return it which I wasn't prepared to stump up for and so he offered me £65 back so I am happy with that.

Coo that's decent of him to offer £65 back. Was there any logic to that sum?

Not that I could work out.

I did have to refund his partial refund though as he did it as a payment instead of a refund which meant A) I paid fees on it and B) he could do a chargeback once I had left feedback (which is sad that I should think someone may actually do something like that).

After being burned by another member of this forum recently this has at least restored my faith in human nature (for the moment).

I'm puzzled that a refund could be offered that had no logic to it....

Sending a payment rather than a partial refund just might have been beyond his control. Once only I wanted to send a partial refund and PayPal came up with "you can only make a full refund for this item" which was a bit mysterious. I couldn't see anything that was different about it in any way, but there's something there obviously. If anyone knows the answer to that I'd be glad if you'd share it!

I'll be interested to hear the outcome and hope it works out OK.
Best regards, John

He did a partial refund on the original purchase within a couple of hours so its all sorted. I don't think a lot of people realise its possible or that if they do a payment instead then they are being charged fees on the full original amout rather than the ammended, or the fact the person they are paying also has fees.

I think I'm rambling now

I suppose Paypal are happy with it this way though as they get their cut twice.

Very nice lens, you will be happy with that when it arrives. Does it come with the tube to make it 1:1 macro?

Ah yes, I use mine all the time .. great lens and as you say 1:1 without the adapter. Mine cost me £70 delivered with a PK/A adaptall 2 mount but that was a good 12 months ago now. I found a hood for it on Ebay eventually but it took a while.
