As has already been said - best thing to do is just take lots of shots, and then look back at the best and the worst, and see how both the technical settings (e.g. focus mode, f-stop, iso, etc) and the artistic composition (e.g. your position relative to subject, angle of lens, etc) differ. There are no magic settings that are always right, but you eventually will get a instinctive feeling of where to start.
The Kx is a fantastic tool, I've had a great time with mine - just try to resist the deadly lure of LBA (lens buying addiction) for a while, those two kit lenses really will do 90% of what you need at the moment! The real fun starts with old manual-focus primes, anyway...
