Another K5 problem...

Just got my K5 back after it being sent away to have the lens release button replaced and the horizon indicator straightened (it's still one dot out)...I wasn't expecting them to convert it to manual focus at the same time. The focus select switch is not working, it only moves to two positions, both of which don't change anything. It's stuck in manual focus, and it was working fine (using a rivet to change lenses) before I sent it for repair.....looks like another 4-6 weeks without a camera

Personally I think Pentax should replace the camera rather than make me go cameraless yet again.

That is a f****ing disgrace IMO. I had the problem with the lens release, and then mysterious black specks on the sensor which Johnsons seemed/refused to recognize or even acknowledge. 8 weeks of back and forth repair time resulted in a very 'time to kick off' email to SRS. They in turn contacted Pentax UK, 2 weeks later I had a new K5 from Johnsons...
???

So 'kick off' would be my advice though I imagine you have already. I guess we just have to remember its only the negative you hear about, hell apparently Pentax have got the highest customer satisfaction rating but if your one of the minority you find it hard to believe...

I have emailed Mathers, who sent the camera away for repair last time, and told them I want a new camera, will see what Pentax say. I am pretty p*$%ed off, as you can imagine.

For the previous repair, before sending it back to Mathers, I took the camera to Pentax's main repair centre in Osaka, but they wanted to charge me for both fixing the lens release and the horizon indicator They said the two year warrantly only applied in the UK, never mind that the camera faults were all down to them. Absolutely appalling customer service.
I saw that Pentax had recently come out top in some survey of customer satisfaction, but they never asked me! If I didn't have so many PK lenses I would be swapping systems.

What may help? There's no link or anything in your post, Paul? I will be getting my camera repaired in the UK again. I am going to Osaka again soon, but Pentax Japan have already proved to be a complete waste of time.

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Faulty goods and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)

On [date of purchase] I bought a [description of purchase] from you for [insert price] which has stopped working.

The problem is [enter description of fault].

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) states that when a consumer buys goods from a trader they must be: as described; of a satisfactory quality; and fit for any purpose made known at the time of sale to the seller.

This legislation also states that the seller, not the manufacturer, is legally obliged to sort out a problem if the goods do not meet these requirements.

The law also says I have six years from the date of purchase to claim damages for faulty goods.

My goods are not [delete as appropriate - as described/fit for purpose/of satisfactory quality] and I wish to claim a [delete as appropriate - repair/replacement/refund] of my goods under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 as amended.

Please respond to my complaint within 7 days from receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully,
[your name]

Thanks, Paul, I will see first what Mathers come up with. They have always provided me with excellent service; I have purchased three cameras from them and a couple of lenses over the last few years. They also gave me a free lens (albeit an old 75-150mm) last year. Though perhaps they should have tested the camera properly before returning it.

I'm sure they will be reasonable in dealing with this problem. It's Pentax and their servicing (Johnsons) I am p*^^ed of with.
