Another adventure with the DA*50-135

Thought i'd post some more pics I took today with the sublime 50-135. I've been a bit adventurous with my PP for most of these - trying new things, experimenting with colour and B&W, and i'd be interested in what you think.

Not entirely sure if some of them work, but that's what experimenting is all about!

I really like Nr.5. But as a suggestion...... I would have cloned away the In-focus branch in the top right corner (it stands out to much) and desaturated the girls shirt. Only leaving her hair and trousers with a hint of colour.
I think the picture will be more balanced that way.

I took the 4th shot down as I've improved it a bit, so here it is:




The original did'nt have the stalk? of the leaf coloured, and also there was a blot of colouration on the leaf which was a little distracing.

I really like the composition and the mood of no1, it looks great in B&W its only negative comment is that the eyes and or face is not in focus a bit more.

The tweaked version of no3 is the best i think, and I like the hoverfly shot.

The butterfly doesn't work for me in that style, I think its because the butterfly its self isn't colourful enough co go with the vibrant green of the leaf (maybe with a red admiral or a peacock the colour would have been there?) Also the blurred background is a little weird did you do it? There is a blade of grass thats out of focus but casts a shadow on the in focus leaf.

PS. I take it the tamron is on the shelf gathering dust?

They look pretty good to me. The No 3 looks stunning to me with the back light and the hair with that bit of lighting around shining at it. But I would have preferred still if eyes were in focus. Did you do it purposely that way or you missed the focus?
The one walking away that you have re-edited after Martin's advice looks stunning, its worth making a poster and hanging on the wall .

Hoverfly? ahhhh its absoluely fabulous, am so green with envy .

Nice effects Bob. I like the original one of your daughter walking away from the camera best. I suppose cloning the branch out is a slight improvement, but I still like it as it is.

The grass on the gate is also nice.

It's funny Paul - I thought exactly the same thing with regards to the butterfly about 10 mins ago, to add a red hue, i'll have to give that a bash. The background of that shot was not forced to be blurry in PP - I was shooting at f2.8 for all of these (I love the fact that this lens is tack sharp wide open). If I'd have stepped down and the entire shot was sharp, I personally think that it would have been too much.

The focus on the grass in front of Molly was deliberate - to have the grass sharp. I quite liked the effect, but I wanted to have the grass in colour to emphasise it further.

Amin, the hoverfly shot you grabbed on that eventful day of yours recently with the 60-250 trumps mine from a great height in my opinion, (especially because it was in flight) but i'll admit that your shot was the reason I tried to do one myself. I was lucky that one had landed - much easier stationary, but not as impressive IMO.

Love the 'new' version of number 5 and like the focus and effect of no.3.

As for the hoverfly... it's superb, cracking shot!

1 and 5 for me Bob. No1 has definitely got to have a place one the wall, nice tones and composition, I like the way your daughter is looking away from the camera, and the fact that her face is just out of focus makes the shot I think.

I had a bash at making the butterfly more red, and it ended up looking like old b&w footage does when it has been coloured in - obviously fake.

I'll give that effort up methinks...
