Alternative Web Browsers

I've been using Firefox for some time now and I've tried Opera and Safari (yes, on a PC), but I've now found Orca (Mozilla-based) and Avant (IE-based) and I like the ability to finely tune them.

They seem quicker than Firefox 3 and IE - but it might be just me.

There's also a social networking browser called Flock.

See what you think here

The only reason I use Firefox over Opera is Add Blocker Plus. Gets rid of all the waste of bandwidth adverts. I use Opera 9.5 when on the go on my PDA and that is great! Shame about all the adds clogging up my measly mobile connection.

Safari is certainly the most elegant browser.

I don't know, Opera is pretty damn smart.

I switched from Opera to Firefox when I got my new computer. I did so reluctantly as I like Opera, but the bill payer installed Firefox instead. Most websites work with Firefox, including my internet banking sites - which never worked with Opera. That is the only reason I'm glad I have FF now. I really liked Opera, and if it was supported by more major sites I would go back to it.

I do like FF's spelling checker though, and the fact it will spell check both my Dutch and my English.

I use IE7 and Firefox. It's entirely possible to use whatever browsers we want to for specific purposes.

Most users use IE in one form or another (if you use 6 then it's worth thinking about upgrading to 7) and sometimes there are compatibility issues with others on some websites.

Whatever suits the individual is the right choice.
Best regards, John

Well I've got IE7, Firefox 2 & 3, Opera and Safari in current use, since I often need to check that web sites work Ok on more than one browser.

Opera and Safari are very nice, but for doing real work, and all-round flexibility, I think Firefox wins out, largely because of the range of extensions.

PicLens, AdBlock, FlashBlock, FireBug, FireShot are the ones I use most.

I'm editing this with Safari - and seeing all those ads again is a bit of a shock

I use mainly Firefox. My computer runs with Vista, and I tried to download IE 8 Beta, and it bugged up a lot of things on my computer. Right now, I don't think that's a good combo.

linkhey George, did you know there's a command you can use in the "Terminal" that opens up Safari's "Debug" mode?
this allows you to emulate other browsers (my bank for example used to only work with internet explorer)?

Just trying Orca now, it seems OK. I have been using FF for longer than I can remember (now on version 3), one of the best extensions (IMHO) is NoScript. I notice the difference when I use CCleaner, hardly any garbage to remove. I tried Opera a while ago, and it wasn't as good as FF (again IMHO). I will have a look later, and see what 'presents' Orca leaves me
I also have IE7, but only use it occasionally for sites that seem to be built specifically for it
