have played with an preproduction on Photokina and it was nice but I believe the cheaper options of Metz and Sigma are probably just as good although they make the camera more front (lens) heavy.
Has anyone compare them side by side, quite interesting what someone else thinks with more knowledge.

The Sigma is only $30 cheaper than the Pentax. So at that, the Pentax would be a better buy but do people use them.

I believe Clarky is a fan of this flash. When he can drag himself away from his tinny he'll no doubt tell you himself.

I have the Sigma and its very good but to be honest only chose it because I got it for an excellent price. If the Pentax is only a little more then I would go for that .. I think the only difference between them is that the Sigma has wireless flash control.

The Pentax flash is an exceptionally good flash. It would have been even better if they'd given it wireless capabilities as well.
I had both the AF080C and AF140C before it and on P-TTL cameras the AF160FC is miles better.
For macro work, it's excellent. The wireless bits would have been useful in the studio.

I recall Clarky saying something similar - about the 160C being much better than its predecessors.
Could you expand on that? Power aside, how is it better?
My lowly 080C feels a bit slighted.

I have to agree with Pete, The Pentax flash is excellent, straight out of the box its so simple to use, I upgraded from the AF080C and its been one of my better investments.
I reckon I have used the AF160FC more times than I used the AF080C, in a fraction of the time.
Edit. It adds more punch to your shots, its versatility which allows you to turn down or turn off one side or another of the flash also helps. Just a very good flash.

As Clarky says, it's so easy to use, but that's not the half of it. The ability to vary the proportion of light from one half of the ring to the other gives a bit of modelling (shadows) to the images, rendering them much more natural looking than can be achieved with either of it's predecessors.
It's primarily P-TTL capable but I believe when fitted to older bodies it can also use TTL. I'd read up on the manual to certify that statement though. I seem to recall reading it somewhere.
If you've half a mind to get one . . . that's probably all you need . It would have been a killer flash if it had wireless though, like the other Pentax guns.

Haven't had much chance to play with ours yet, but initial impressions are very good.
The Metz had me tempted for a long time as its purely wireless and could also be used with another flashgun on top of the camera for extra options.
What swung it in the end was partly Chris at SRS only having 2 or 3 left at the old price, and the fact that it is actually a ring flash! It has 2 curved bulbs nearly making a full circle, whereas the Metz has 2 very small vertical bulbs. Not sure how much of a difference it actually makes in the real world, but to me it just sounded better!
