I thought the SR worked of the back of a focus lock
Nope it goes on when you half press the shutter release, no matter how or what.
So when you're working with the AF on the back it's better to half press the shutter first when you get ready for the shot so that the SR has time to get ready.
That makes more sense, af lock from shutter button would therefore interfer with the speed of SR as you would be lifting your finger off the the shutter button each time and hence resetting the SR rather than keeping it contstant. I currently use AF via the shutter button with my K7 and the focus will always lock before the SR comes on, perhaps I need to start use the AF button instead !

It's in the EXIF data if the SR was ready or not so you can check it if you want.

It might be that the SR keeps on with the K7 as well when you release the button but i ain't sure...

It's also useful in that you focus one time, then you can take several shots over the next few seconds without worrying that the camera will try and refocus. That used to drive me crazy when I used shutter button focussing.
Exactly. I usually use shutter button focus, but there's some occasions where I want to shoot a few shots of a similar scene and don't need or want to keep having the camers re-focus every time, especially when the subject is moving around but roughly the same distance away. In this case I'll select my user mode where AF button only is enabled and use ti to focus and then fire away.
