Hi, I have just found this lens, but to be honest I haven't got a clue about it, will it fit and function normally on a k100d? is it an old one? thanks, jacqui.link

Can't open link Jaqui, what lens is it? This chart helps with lens compatibility, but of course all Pentax mount (PK or PKA lenses) are usable to some degree. http://www.mosphotos.com/PentaxLensCompatibility.html

It's a fully functional AF 'budget telephoto' lens...

The same site has a:
Contax 139 c/w 50mm f1.7 Zeiss Planar T* lens for £100
The lens alone must be worth that?

Hi Jacqui

Do a quick Google on Parkers Photgraphic. they are in Woolston - your side of Southampton, and have several Pentax fit AF lenses in stock. They look like they all date fromn the film era - but they will work on an *istD.

Could be a cheap way of working out what lenses you really need.

Probably - if you have a Contax/Yashica body, without a lens, and want to go back to film. I have the f1.8 50mm Planar (from a Rollei SL35E) sitting in my box of junk, along with a half dead Rollei, and some more QBM lenses. I just wish I could get £100 for it, or even half that.

Leitax do a converter for the Contax (probably AE mount) for about 58 Euros. I don't really want a 50mm, but an 85mm would be worth converting. link

A Contax 85mm f/1.4 sold recently on ebay for £360 link

That's a good price for that lens Jacqui - I sold one of those 2 weeks ago for £65

Worked perfectly well for a budget lens on my K20D. It will never win any IQ awards but perfectly usable - especially if you avoid the extremes. The good news is at that price - if you didn't like it - you should be able to resell without loss

Yes, the original Contax lenses were good. But, you mentioned a Contax 139 which is a Yashica, styled by Porsche, with a Yashica designed mount, and a Contax badge. Similarly the Planar lens was German designed, but - dependant on its age - probably built by Yashica. Some of the early DDR produced lenses were Contax designs, built in a former Contax factory, and of Contax quality. Others would not even make good bookends.

At least my Planar is honest - it's marked "Zeiss by Rollei"

A lens made for film, i.e. the 35mm format, will always be usable on a digital camera. It's the other way that may be a problem.

All you need to know about using lenses intended for film on digital is that they will have a different field of view. The Pentax DSLR sensors are smaller than a frame of 35mm film, so a 28mm lens is no longer a wide angle one (hence why your kit lens is an 18-55mm, roughly equivalent to the 28-80mm used on film).

Inversely, most of the DA lenses are designed to cover the smaller sensor and will vignette if used on a 35mm film body. A few are ok, such as the DA 35mm f2.4, DA 40mm and DA 70mm. Others may also work, but those are the three I've either tried myself or seen evidence of.
