Cloned out for me. But you would have to be careful, as some nature competitions would not allow cloning

I don't think it does. The right wing of the middle bird is ugly and almost forms a leading line leading nowhere. The top bird makes it less noticeable, but still not quite right.

It improves it. However, the other two are not interacting with each other in any way and the nearer bird doesn't benefit from the same plane of focus as the farther so the composition isn't really working for me. Two in some way related or just the one.

I prefer the first shot, the bird in the centre has a purpose, it`s heading somewhere, but Lennybloke may have nailed it

Don't clone out the OOF bird - it gives greater depth to the image. I like Lennybloke's crop, that works for me.
