was just reading about updating firmware and it says make sure you have camera plugged into one otherwise damage the camera

No. Just make sure you have a freshly charged battery. Firmware updating only takes a minute or two; not hours.
In normal use, you never need an AC adapter, and I am sure very few people on here have one.

Emma, A fully charged battery is all you need.
It only takes a couple of minutes to update your firmware, If the camera was to shutdown while in the process of updating, it will render your camera inoperable.
You don't need an AC adapter for this purpose.
