Dan : Well, I found out how to download that Silkypix to my 'Ancient' TIME Computer donated to me and the kids by their 'Rich Aunty Cathy'. It does me for now- it has been set up by a computer expert who repaired it after her Son took parts of it apart, and there is no need for 'Colour Calibration' with those Spyder things as it gives perfect colour balance, and there has never been any viruses or nasties on it .

The important thing is it works.

on the positive side, there is little chance you'll go too far overboard on image manipulations, considering the slower processors and possible crashes, you'll be very conservative....

Kinda' reminds me of my Grandma....she used to give us kids Buckley's cough syrop when we were sick. It worked alright, but nobody in my family ever faked being sick! (truth is we faked being well to avoid it).

I can just imagine the next post we will get from you on the subject of computers.

I ran windows ME fo many years and you may be surprised to hear I had less problems with it than any other windows OS and that includesc 95, 98, 98SE, XP home, XP Pro and finally Vista......which is coming off my laptop as soon as I find the time to transfer files and do a re-instal of XP.

My Vista runs the Pentax software without problem, it also runs the remote assistant, plus the codec that allows you to view PEF files in explorer is a real boon, Vista is a real charm to use, HOWEVER.....very little of my existing software including photoshop 7 will run on it, including my printer drivers and can I get my DVD writer to burn discs NO! because there is a problem with the drivers for that too, last night I tried to view a PDF file, after several vain attempts to open it the penny dropped "oh here we go again with compatability issues"

I'm amazed microsoft chose to call this version of windows VISTA, because its almost blind to everything

It's not the reliability of ME that I was concerned about, although yours seems to have been one of the happier experiences that I have read about.

It's more that the OS won't work with many modern programs, won't recognise large hard disks, and probably won't be happy with USB2. And, even more importantly, the hardware will be quite incapable of running any editing or RAW conversion software at a reasonable speed.

Basically, it's a crippled system which prevents Peter making full use of his lovely camera.

And since it's probably only got a 10GB hard disk, he'll soon run out of space.

Windows ME, along with 98, were definitely versions better to give a miss. 95 was pretty decent and I stuck with that right up until XP was out - and I've no intention of "upgrading" to Vista anytime soon.

I still have one box with Windows NT on it because my SCSI film scanner doesn't work with anything later than NT or Windows 95.

Which scanner is it? I may be able to help.

I got onto 'my Computer' and found the system disc and it said "24.4 GB,used 7.08GB free 17.3GB" I also have the AVG Free anti virus latest version loaded frpom that grisoft place.

Ed Hamrick's Vuescan should work. As long as the SCSI interface is ok then you should be find with it. (I have a couple of 2k/XP compatible PCI SCSI cards if you get desperate!)

Kim & Matt - the film scanner is one of the first Minolta Scan Duals. It's redundant now anway as a shiney new Epson 4490 arrived today and, despite being a flatbed, it's way better than the Minolta (which was bought at least 10 years ago) ever was.

Talking about 'Vuescan'- I WON a free Professional Edition in the Amateur Photographer magazine. Mr Hamrick sent me an e-mail from USA giving me some codes to put it with price at $0 and I managed to do it and have had a go to scan some larger 6x7 trannies which would not fit on my Epson 1650 flatbed, but with the Vuescan they work !
