A tree and a moon

Had a bunch more PPG acceptances recently, but I think all of them have been on PUF in the last month so I thought I'd just post this one:

One tree moon (yes, my title mojo has deserted me )
Comment Image

This was actually a daylight shot which I had been messing around with for Stefan's duo-tone comp a while back. I never entered it as I wasn't happy with the result. Later I added the moon which I think added a little more zing.

C&C welcome! There are a couple of aspects to this that never satisfied me, I was wondering if anyone else will pick up on them or if it's just me

Congrats Tim - for me the thing that springs out is the posterisation of a fair piece of the sky, under the moon.

Also, were the shot to have been illuminated by the moon alone, the light on the edges of the tree canopy, as well as the growth beneath it, would have been different (or absent?).

Thank i-berg, thats very interesting! You've managed to pick up on two completely new points! I'm not sure I can see the posterisation, do you mean the horizontal line between the lighter bit and the darker bit? Good point about the moonlight though

Oops!

It wasn't meant in a way that was 'picking it to pieces', if you know what I mean. Was posterisation not the right expression? You're right - it was intended to describe the more-or-less horizontal bands in the sky below the moon...

Oh no, I want it picked to pieces please! It's been helpful so far!

Yes I think posterisation is correct, although usually I it seems to be used to describe a 'blocky' gradient where there aren't enough colours to display a smooth gradient.

It's a very nice concept.

A couple of things I've noticed, as well as the posterisation:-

1: The tree seems to have a lighter 'halo' around it.
2: The light banding in the sky has a shadowey area at the right hand edge.

Other than that, I like it.

PS: The image as viewed in the thread and using Firefox just doesn't do it justice. I saved it and opened it in Picasa, and it looks much, much better.

Aha, we have a winner! It was the halo that I've been obsessing over. It seemed quite prominent to me, but I was wondering if it was just because I have been staring at this photo for so long! I'll see if i can reduce it any further. Will look at the posterisation and the shadowy right edge too, thanks guys.

Sorry iBerg I have been fixated on the lower right branch, but you're right the top part (the canopy?) also shows a bit of haloing!
