A Study in Blue

This is my first attempt at submitting a photograph.

It was taken as a JPEG on a K10D with a DA* 16-50 lens.

It was cropped in PSE 5.0 to the letterbox format (overall width is unaltered), but there are no other changes.

The depth of colour and amount of variation in the blue varies a lot, depending on which monitor I use to view it or which printer is used to print it.

Nice composition. One thing though. Something didn't look quite right so I checked it in Lightroom which confirmed my suspicion that the horizon (waters edge left to waters edge right) is not quite horizontal.

I thought about changing it in PS, but could not quite decide what to use as the benchmark, since the two shore lines are converging at different angles.

With reflections I always try to use the reflection itself to level a pic. A point and its reflection should always be vertical (lens distortion aside), so I would suggest using the right hand edge of the central post in your photo. Use the 'straighten tool' in photoshop (I have it in Elements 4), which will turn the image on its side when it straightens it, but you just have to rotate it back 90 degrees.

Looks good to me using this method.

Exactly right. It was taken from the quay at high water, fairly early in the morning on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

I like the fact that the water is almost mirror smooth but about to be disturbed by the RIB on the extreme right hand side of the picture.

I don't follow this fanatical devotion to horizontals. You can let it spoil your impression of a perfectly good picture.
