A few with the 18-50 RE

Another dull day yesterday but I fancied a stroll in the fresh air, so wandered around Cookham Church (by the Thames in Bucks). These were shot with a hand-held K-70 + 18-50 RE.

The captured colour images were converted to mono in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, with a few tweaks in PaintShop Pro X8.

Cheers.

Nice tones overall. I like the last image in particular, it feels more engaged with the subject to me.
I appreciate "dull" days for photography - the very diffuse light brings out less blatant characteristics in subjects.

Well it is a rather monochrome kind of spring we're having so far! The flowers don't seem to know whether they're coming or going, and I imagine its been hard to extract much colour from all the the gloom for many landscape photographers. In your set here Philip you faced dull skies and the cool greys of stone. Not easy at all!

I wonder, does switching to the "overcast" white balance setting and boosting yellows and oranges bring any hope for worthwhile colour images in these circumstances or is it a bit futile .....?

It's interesting you chose the little 18-55 " retractable" .... Did you expect to need the extra width over your 20-40 ? It's obviously a handy little lens. I think when pixel peeping I can see a reduction in clarity compared to what I've seen in similar shots you've taken with the 20-40, but they all look good at normal viewing distance

Thank you Sry and Nigel.

This outing was really for just a bit of experimenting. I got the 18-50 RE cheaply a little while ago, mainly to have a WR lens to slip in the pocket when taking along only one or two of the non-WR Limited primes. It certainly fits.... literally! When closed it isn't much bigger than one of the primes and it's very light weight. So I put the RE on the K-70 and took all the shots with it, just to see how it did. I'm certainly no expert judge, but it seems to me that its not bad at normal viewing sizes, and pretty good for a so-called kit lens. The other part of the experiment was to have a play with the Nik software, and I am enjoying that also.

Cheers.
