Norton AV 360

Another vote against Norton here. I use Kaspersky, which can be bought very cheaply indeed (£10.52 +P&P for 3 users, 1 year) from aria.co.uk

I have to admit, I'm seriously tempted by Eset NOD32 when the Kaspersky licence runs out as it has an excellent reputation for its low overhead.

Thanks for all your advice, the clock is ticking and I have to make up my mind shortly.

I have been checking PC Advisor and like you say AVG gets a good rating as does ESET also MS Windows One Care Live looks good too.

Which order do I do it in?

Download my new choice of AV SW then destroy Norton, as I can see if I do it the other way around I am going to be wide open?!

Matt, the only reason I mentioned my up an coming website was because if and when it has a shop on it I was worried about purchasing protection.

Irrelevant. The shopping-cart is run from the HOST web-site computer, not yours

My suggestion:
1. Download Eset install file onto your desktop (or directory)
2. Unplug the PC from broadband
3. Uninstall Norton (and reboot)
4. Install Eset
5. Now connect to broadband.
6. Eset should update and you'll be fine.

Even if you left your machine "wide open", Eset Smart Security does an incredible job of cleaning up! As I mentioned, it even cleaned up a PC that had never had any AV product!

If you have a half decent router incorporating an ADSL Modem and firewall, the chances of any infection or hacking are minimal as (usually) all incoming TCP/UDP ports are closed by default by the firewall.

If you have a USB modem however, you have only the Windows firewall to protect you from internet borne threats.

Recommendation: Invest in an external firewall/ADSL modem/router device. You'll sleep easier at nights.

My personal choice is the Netgear DGFV338 ProSafe Wireless ADSL Modem VPN Firewall Router (Yes, that's it's full name). It also incorporates an 8 port 10/100Mb/s Ethernet Switch.

Additionally, I use AVG Free Anti-Virus and Windows Defender. In 8 years, I've never been hacked or received any viruses that have not been detected.

Ha-Ha, from someone else, who left the windows world at least in my private life, years ago, Virus is a Windows thing. Not helped by Norton, a pig to get rid of, but I managed on 2 computers now, and I installed CLAM-AV on both. Resulting in two laptops that run at a more respectable pace, as befits there FAST processors!

Thanks for the heads up Matt. I have just finshed with the 30day trial of the Eset antivirus system and its everything you preached.
I have now purchased 4 licenses for my home network at an excellent price. cheers

Norton 360 clings every where on a pc I use Norton 2008 and it runs just fine, just looked at the eset site and i might try it in Feb when my Norton ends but saying that Norton has never let me down. I would agree with others that AOL is a pain in the B**t when i moved ISP's from AOL i had to reformat both the laptop and desktop to get rid.

Just a point What else do forum members use to keep things sweet on there PC, L/top etc,

Best bet is Eset Security centre - combines firewall, antispam, antispy, and antivirus
But I've used Eset Antivirus (before the security centre) + Adaware.

On my main Laptop I use nothing (Linux). On a old desktop with XP as OS I now use ESET. This because Matt has described it so well in this thread. And yes.....it is a lot faster running now. Thanks again Matt, for the tip.

I use Avast anti virus (free) and Comodo firewall (free), also CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner), CCleaner also do a free defragmeter called Defraggler. I use Spybot occasionally too
Firefox 3 browser with add ons, no script, Adblock, WOT (web of trust)and a few non essentials
