77mm filters

Am I right in thinking that the Samsung 12-24 is a 77mm filter as well as the 16-50 f2.8?

So I can use the same filters on both lenses?

Im just checking as I am in the process of buying a Samsung 12-24 which has filter size of 77mm and I am also looking to buy the Pentax 16-50 f2.8 as that uses the same filter size of 77mm.

So am I right in thinking the filters I buy will fit both lenses?

Regarding the ebay filter deal, this is my opinion :

If you are going to spend a lot of money on aquiring good lenses, you will be doing yourself a disservice by putting a cheap filter on the front of it. I have no idea if the ones you linked to are any good or not, but a cheaper filter is likely to give you less of an effect than a better made one; impair image quality more;and possibly introduce more flare.

Now there have been discussions on here before where less expensive filters have served very well for some forum members, and I am sure someone will have done scientific tests showing that the most expensive are not the best.

I guess what I am saying is that like most things in life, you get what you pay for, and cheapest is likely not to be the best in this instance.

Yes you are right, the filters will fit both lenses. But I wouldn't put those filters you have in your link onto my lenses.

You pay big money for quality lenses and you put cheap filters in front of them. Bad economics if you ask me. Stick with the well known brands like Hoya and if your budget stretches that far, get the pro versions.

Why do you want filters anyway, protection : I only use Cir-polarisers on my lenses.

.......and like Clarky I also only use a polariser. No UV or "protection" filter for me. No need.

I'm after a polariser and a nd6 filter, that's all.

Have a look at Marumi Filters, they are a similar specification (slim and multi coated) to Hoya but at much less cost.

I have been using Marumi for sometime and think the quality is right up there with Hoya.

B+W is also an option although it seems I'm the only one shooting with them
Oh Heliopan are also very good I heard.
Why is everyone here so Hoya minded... trying to support Pentax indirectly maybe?

B & W 77mm MRC Circular Polariser £129.99; more costly than Hoya.

I would sugest that traditionally most uk photographic shops stocked mainly Hoya Filters. Perhaps this is why UK photographers are Hoya minded.

I recently got a Marumi 77m circular polariser after reading this comparison of the major players. Read before you buy, because Hoya fared shockingly badly (considering their fairly high cost)!!!! (Although note that Hoya had all top 3 positions in the same site's UV filter comparison). Also worth noting that B+W's most expensive CPL turned out to be a LPL and Heliopan and Tiffen were found to be amongst the worst performers.

Graham, like you said UK photographers are Hoya minded might also be the case that the EU mainland are more B+W orientated since they are German.

Yeah very strange and to be honest I've never seen that filter among the filter list of B+W so that's very interesting.
But as a note, linear pol don't interferes with today's Pentax AF systems so could be used.

I use Pentax filters as they are available in the Gulf as well as Sigma EX, Nikon and Marumi. Hoya do not get a lot of press here for some reason?

I use a UV or skylight on all lenses as fine sand sticks to them, so without them, it would stick to the fron element.

Not the only one Stefan. When I do use a filter (rarely these days) my collection are B+W, Heliopan, Pentax and Hoya.

Im thinking I may not even bother with a filter now.

Just use a lens hood and then cap when the lens is not in use?

Or just go for a protector?
