So how did it work? Did you choose subjects where the dynamic range wasn't all that much? Or expose for the bits you wanted and put up with the dark bits?
5 stops seems incredibly limiting...

Basically you exposed to make sure the highlights retained some detail. Washed out highlights kill a slide. The shadows took care of themselves. Obviously the best subjects were not on sunny days at noon and not with high contrast slide films such as Orwochrome.johnriley wrote:

Now Orwochrome was a miracle in itself and was so vivid that it made Velvia look tame. Not subtle, rather like using Vivid on a DSLR in bright contrasty lighting.

Yes, exactly. Which is why I say that trying at least one slide film is a good discipline - it shows exactly how good we are at composing and exposing as what you shoot is what you get.

It was discovering precisely that, and noting the number of films (and hence expense) it would take me to get any good that I switched back to film, and stayed there..

I (almost) never shot anything else. I have two drawers of a filing cabinet full of hanging files of slides. But then the majority of my photos were taken with half an eye on giving lectures.Only ever took one roll of slides. All dreadful. Vowed never to use it again.
The best thing about the digital image age is the time it has freed up from (a) taking photos of images (mainly maps and plans) in books and (b) sorting and resorting slides. A half unit course is 20 lectures, with about 40 images a lecture, so 800 images per half unit. Taking all those slides in and out of carousels was a right royal pain. Setting up new lectures takes time, but when you give it again the following tear... yay!

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Richard, If you post the same question twice, you have to look in two places for an answer. Best only post a question once.

There is no UK release date as yet but many expect an announcement to be made at Photokina next week.
