£400 doesn't seem to bad considering it is a fast prime with weather sealing. I think that could easily make up the £150 difference when compared to the FA50.
£400 for the 55, minus £150? That makes your FA50 £250, right? SRS has them at £159.

Oops, my bad... That is quite a premium then, better hope it is exceptional!

As others have intimated, I think this is going to be a new classic. Good portrait lenses are a Pentax speciality.

I wouldnt disagree with anyone who says this is THE long 1.4 out there, because it seems to have everything beat, with weather sealing, SDM, and we'll just have to see about the quality

But i wouldnt go so far as to replace an FA50 or even my pentax-m 50! the advantage just isnt enough considering the price.

I'm more interested in a DA*30 or just the sigma 30mm 1.4. I need the wider view since 50 on an APS-C is a little bit too tight.

Seems to me like this lens is a little bit too specialist...

The reviews I have seen of the Sigma 30mm f1.4 have been rather mixed, and certainly not universally complimentary.

At this time Pentax has various "standard lens" options available that will be far superior.

31mm > twice the price of sigma's 30.

I'm not a pixel peeper, but i'm a real 1.4 addict. At the moment the only one of my lenses i use is a Pentax-M 50mm 1.4. The whole thing starts behaving like a medium format camera

You can still get the FA35F2 which is quite sharp wide open.

Don't think it will beat the 50F1.7 lenses though for sharpness wide open as they are quite amazing.

I was idly looking at lenses earlier, and saw the price here http://www.adorama.com/PX5514AFD.html UK equiv approx 500GBP and I agree with the OP, it seems a bit steep. I would have to do a lot more portrait work to go for this at this price, makes the FA43 look like darn good value IMO, still I've never used an FA*85 so perhaps I'm missing something !

The cheapest I've seen it for is £379 inc VAT.
