I've got a 55-300 that is, to put it mildly complete rubbish. Do any of you know what sort of trade in value I could expect? I'm after a Sigma 8-16mm.

My 50-300mm DA-L is anything but rubbish, I get excellent results with it. Maybe you have a bad copy, in which case it's worthless, but if it's anything like mine then I'd give it a used sale price worth of AUD$200 as a new WR version can be bought now for AUD$450.
I have no idea what a dealer would offer as a trade in though.

Trade in price for a completely rubbish lens? Not a lot I would have thought

For a version in excellent condition producing wonderful images - no idea what trade in would be - not something I would ever do,

Resale value if boxed mint would be up to 200 - between 125 - 150 if un-boxed/ cased - down to 100 for good condition.

If it is an L version 80-100

I've just withdrawn the one I was selling (metal mount in pouch) unboxed for 160 incl &P & P. No enquiries at all.

Thanks for that guys, it's given me an idea at least. It's boxed and in good condition and who's to know how bad it is without testing - perhaps there are even worse copies out there...

Why? What's the issue?

It's not very sharp, even stepped down. I've tried adjusting AF on my K5 but it's made no difference. I will try again once my AF target rig comes out of storage in a couple of weeks but I'm not expecting much.

Is the Sigma 120-400 any better generally?

My 55-300 is not like that at all. Its very unusual for someone to come on here complaining about this particular lens..

Fine tune the AF at infinity - I use a convenient church steeple about a mile distant, or use the Moon. On mine even one step of the AF tune makes a difference. Then again it might be a bad one, my first copy was quite decentered and went back.

Mine's very good - once I took the protective filter off the end! You haven't said whether or not you have a protector/UV filter on it, if you have - take it off and try again.

On my example, I was pretty dissatisfied with the sharpness until I took the filter off - for then on it has been extremely good, especially when you consider the price.

Yes in my experience having owned one for years - the Sigma 120-400 is far superior

My DA L 55-300 is a belter of a lens, sharp as a knife and better than the Sigma 150-500 I had.

I would not sell mine, example reason below:

If we're talking about this one then I'm stunned to hear that.

It's my favourite lens and I have had 2 - 3 people ask if shots taken with it were taken with a prime and one was shocked that it wasn't. I wouldn't let it go for all the tea in China .... mind I don't drink tea but you know what I mean.
