24mm try out

Took the camera out yesterday with the 24mm lens to see if I could find out how to use this glass to its best advantage.

This is the first time I have used this lens outside having only used it for the odd (often very odd) interior shot – I have put them on here because I need help and suggestions.

The sky was flat grey and it was foggy so I know about that but I need advice on almost everything else I am not even sure where I should focus – so as much comment as you can please.

First batch are shots of a field, all edited to some extent to attempt to improve the sky.

These are from the second batch I took yesterday, still foggy and a flat grey sky, not a new topic but I like these, criticism welcome and encouraged.

Acommon subject but new to me and I like them but I know it could be a lot better.

What lens is it ?

The first image shows it is certainly sharp. I think you focussed closer on the second image, but I am guessing the wind is moving the grasses. You can use a hyperfocal point to try and get everything in focus if that is your wish. There are online calculators to help you or the lens itself may have a marking.

The last image in my opinion would be improved by losing the left hand trees and having the single foggy tree on the right in sight.

I think the first two pylon shots would have had more impact if they were symmetrical. Directly underneath the central cable in the first and with the far pylon in the middle of the inverted V of the legs of the closest one.
Is this an old manual lens? The first picture of the lake shows it's capable of very good results.I think the second may have been focused too close.The foreground grass looks sharper than the horizon.( But thay could also be camera shake?) 24mm lenses can usually have everything from a few feet to infinity in focus as long as it's not wide open.
You're on the right track just get out and use it more. Thats the beauty of digital, you can see what works and what doesn't very quickly.

Thank you Peter and Mark for your helpful comments, yes it was windy and foggy so not the best of days.

The lens has been in my kit for some while but I thought I could only use it for shot of a room etc, then I noticed people used them for scenic shots, so though I would have a go.

It is a Sigma 24mm called super wide and 2.8 - I was shooting in AV with AF but did not know if I should pick up the focus at the extreme edge of the shot or some where in between, guess it depends on what you wish to achieve and at the moment I don't know.
