1st attempt at portrait shot with window light (2 x pics)

Hi all this was my first attempt at taking a portrait using window lighting. The final image has been edited a little in photoshop.

This was taken with my old Olympus E500 (yes its swearing i know) but im looking forward to taking similar shots with my K10D

I took the E500 back to shop for an exchange

i took several photos both like this and smiling but liked the somber mood of the picture

Nice shot Pete, I'm not really a portrait person so probably the last to offer comment but I do have to agree with Rodger, she looks a bit peeved, did you take too long setting the shot up and she got bored
Otherwise nice lighting, did you use a reflector?

One nitpicking thing, the clasp on her chain has worked its way round her neck, I find it a bit distracting, try cloning it out.

i never noticed the clasp good point

I prefered the somber mood in other words i told her to relax her face for this shot.

PS no i did not use any reflectors just natural incoming light

Sombre? Relaxed? She looks thoroughly fed up, which is a pity because the light is lovely.

I think your shot would have had more impact if the model was not looking directly at the lens, perhaps rather looking at her hands or somewhere similar ( or use PS to put a tear on her cheek). Sombre 'n moody shots work well if they look candid enough. This one doesn't, but don't give up.

She does look fed up. Make the poor lass a cup of tea and try it again.

PS: Lose the cushion too. It looks a bit like the pic was taken with the model laying down,.

We were on holiday at the time in Gran Canaria and this was taken near the patio winows in the apartment around 5pm so light was just settling down.

Ill have a look through some more shots and try to find a happier look.

PS she does have a nice smile but its probably looking at me that makes this expresion

PS; I bet now you know about the clasp your eyes are drawn to it everytime you look at the pic, I find looking a photographs a bit like proof reading, proof readers can spot the mistakes the author has made.
I've had loads of things pointed out on my images that I haven't noticed myself.

Stange enough i edited the neckless in the second pic to get rid of the the claspe as seen in the first picture i suppose i could edit out the neckless all together.

We went the 16th December for a fortnight and Yes we did go up the mountains we hired a car for ten days and went as high as one can go to a place called picas de nieves (snow peak) i got some great photos but with the olympus E500 (RIP) i wish i had the K10d then. I did a lot of reading about photogaphy while i was away. I took 4 magazines and a few books and basically learnt everything i know so far about photography in a kind of crash course for 2 weeks. The portriats were took from using window lighting tips from one the magazines i had, as i have never done portraits before.

WOW that photo you took is fantastic did you take it ?? with what camera ?? and Lense ??

I will post a mountain photo tommorrow.
