I have them both, and would choose the 17-70 over the 18-135 any day, even with it's hunting problems.
The 18-135 is fast and accurate at focussing but mine at least is prone to vignetting and purple fringing. The IQ of the 17-70 is higher imho.
That said I'm not planning on getting rid of either in the near future as the 18-135 makes a good all purpose walk about and weighs less than the 17-70, so is useful for travelling light.

Thanks Gwyn and Mike - although not a one lens solutions - I think I shall stick with my current 17-70SDM + Sigma 50-150 HSM to cover the range then as I am too used to the excellent IQ of both of these to accept compromised performance - carrying one extra lens is no hassle

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

I am taking exactly the same lens combination to the circus tonight (because I want quality over convenience).

Question - Do any of you have real world experience of both?
If so - how would you say the IQ compares?
I can not justify owning both so would have to sell the 17-70 to get the 18-135 - but I do not want to lose any image quality.
