Send it back, I wouldn't have thought it was worth fixing tbh.

The lens is worth around £200 and a SDM replacement is about £175 if I remember correctly.

I can sell you a mint working one if you are interested, it's no good on my K-1.

I've been speaking to someone on the US forums who has managed to source motors from a German company. The price of motors is just over 100 euros per part. I don't think you'll find any repair that's cheaper than what Mike has mentioned when you factor in possible warranty on the repair.

Presumably you're using it on a body that supports SDM? Some of the early ones didn't or needed firmware updates.

Presumably you've tried cleaning the contacts...

Edit: Have you tried this: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/300459-found-c...

Given that many SDM repairs fail later on anyway I wouldn't have thought it worth having such a lens unless it's one of the ones that can be converted to screwdrive.

I'm fairly sure my 17-70 was SDM only. It used to go to sleep and I could wake it up by turning the focus ring back and forth a few times. In the end I put it part ex for a sigma where the dealer found a fault I knew nothing about, not a well remembered lens.

I still have my 17-70. I only use it on manual focus now though as the hunting on autofocus just got ridiculous. I rarely use it because of that.

Hmmm, reading this again did you buy it cheap because the SDM is dead or did you buy it because it was mint and the SDM was dead upon arrival?

Have to say mine has devalued massively just because of this thread but I always loved the lens and it was my most used in this focal length when I used a crop body even though I had the 16-50mm,16-85mm and 18-135mm.
