Digital Photo magazine (May 2009) ranked it 12th (last) in a review of wide-angle zooms. Sigma 10-20mm came top.

Discuss!

I don't know what DPM's problem with Pentax is, but they really have got it bad. I have now bought 3 of them and they all have a lens test where the Pentax gets a panning. Doubt I will buy a fourth.

I think they must have transposed the results or have an unfortunate sight defect.

Check who advertises in the comic, is it mainly Canon or maybe Sony.

Now check where the lenses for that system came.

QED?

Have seen this mag, and others, doing the same with Pentax cameras...
It's the same when they've tested them, how can you give a proper review when you only have them for a few hours/mins.
Always a C or N tops...

Good job I listen to you guys on here...

They look at the graphs with a Nikon or Canon kit lens which tends to add a rose-tint to those lenses...

I am baffled by the criteria they set out for assessing lenses....like marking down the Pentax D-FA 100 macro on features....all I care that you can adjust aperture and focus, have 1:1 reproduction, and great image quality. What else do you need apart from focus lock???

As for the 12-24 I have heard nothing but praise for this lens on PU....a rarity amongst lenses since I hear a lot of negatives on the DA* zooms.....but I have hears stories about the Sigma...What a lot of the magazines tend to forget that:

Sigma don't pay Canon for licences for AF and USM (HSM) I am informed so if you get the Sigma lens it might not work on a future Canon body...

We all know Nikon have betrayed a lot of F-mount users, as the D-40 and D60 can't use legacy Nikkors...

The focal length is not my cup of tea, having found no use for my old Sigma 15-30 either, I am happy to start with 16 mm on my DA*

The Tokina 12-24 came much higher. It appears it might be in a MkII guise though.

As for 'our' Pentax, I struggled to reconcile the words with the marks, although they did make a lot of it's price - £525.

Pleased they worried about the important things and didn't get side-tracked too much on image quality, performance or value for money - 3 stars each (out of 5), although they thought it deserved 4 stars for features and build, "..the finish and feel doesn't appear any more refined than cheaper Pentax lenses and considering the price tag, this is a little disappointing". Overall 3 stars vs the Canon and Nikon with 5 stars.

These tests strike me as flawed.

If they were to do a Sigma/Tamron/Tokina test on the same body then they might be of some value, but who is going to be in a position where they are trying to decide if they should buy a Pentax or a C***n lens?

Guess who buys all the advertising space in this very reputable publication?

When companies set out to dominate an industry corruption is sure to follow, not that the testers are corrupt, it's just....

You make a good point there but lens choice is also important to chose a system so it has value.

The one on the Tokina site has the same lens arangement as Pentax so image quality wise they should atleast be equal, Pentax coating is better then that of Tokina. The only thing Tokina wins in is the money, it's a bit cheaper.

completely agree.......

To digress, been a golfer for the last 14 years......every golf mag seems to pay the coin to the people with the most pricey ads - back cover, inside front and inside back......... there's never a shit TaylorMade or Callaway driver.......??????

We've discussed that particular magazine on these boards before on several occassions and the general concensus always seems to be that they're full of.....

My advice would be to stop buying it - it only encourages them.

Some sad rag Digital Camera I think did a Blue Peter type article on shooting in the rain last month. They used a couple of covers that you buy 50 bulk CD blanks in (tubs) and cut circular holes in the bottom so the lens could see through taped them together back to back with gaffa tape so they could push a Canon camera inside one tub and the bit they looked out of acted as a lenshood to keep the rain off. They then draped a sheet of polythene over the back of the camera and taped it to the tub. Of course this would never keep the rain out 100%, but nowhere in the article did they mention using a waterproof camera such as Pentax

Pentax should use the shots of the Canon with the plastic tubs and polythene trying to keep the rain out in their advertising.
