If you would care to look t the post below this one, you will see a link to the Park Cameras web-page which lists the *ist D.
According to Park, they are still being made, and are in stock.
Since the price is now more or less the same as the DS, you need to choose based on which features you really need.
All in all, the D is the better camera. It has more features, is more flexible, and is more convenient to use (two wheels, like the Z1-P).
However, the DS does have some advantages. Of these, the only one of any real significance, in my view, is the fact that it is a bit faster when shooting continuously. If this is something you, or your friend, does a lot, then consider the DS. Otherwise, the D is the more grown-up camera. (Cue indignant rebuttals from happy DS owners!)

He could save some cash and buy one used. I have had great sucess dealing with KEH Camera in Georgia, USA. They have a couple D's for sale.

You can order the *istD here, in Slovenia... athe price is around 600-650 GBP or 1080-1100 USD. It is a checked Pentax dealer

The *istD continues to be advertised by Park Cameras, at around £579.

A pal of mine is looking at buying a DSLR and as he has seen my *istD that is what he is interested in. As I'm sure you all know there only seems availability of Ds or Dl now but I thought I would ask the question does anyone know of anywhere that still has stock of the *istD.
