We did (sort of)

It was the Samsung GX-1S.
The GX-1L was based on the DL2

So in some ways you can say we did get the DS2, but not with a Pentax badge on it.

Traded in the *istD - CF cards and by today's standards very slow to write to card. LCD also very small. Lovely quiet shutter comp with K10D! And nice size. You could not configure the dials (unlike K10D) - however they were set to shutter and aperture

*istD along with an SD to CF adapter so you can use your existing SD cards in the *istD.

I'm still having sneaking thoughts of buying an *ist D as a second body to my K-m, however I'm not sure which variant (as in D, DS, DL, etc) is the most desirable? The collector in me says to buy an original *ist D as it was the first Pentax DSLR, it also supports TTL flash and a battery grip is available from a practical viewpoint. That said, which model is felt to be the best of the bunch?
Forget the DL straight away. That's Pentax's weakest DSLR of all, and has a pentamirror viewfinder instead of a pentaprism like the D and DS.

Get a DS for a larger LCD screen and faster electronics, or a D for more controls.

Or how about a K10D (or even a K20D!) if you don't mind the larger size?

The *ist D is the clear winner and offers a number of advantages over other Pentax bodies, particularly for someone interested in compatibility with older equipment (which is why I still have mine):

1/ TTL flash.
2/ Accurate Green Button exposure with older lenses.
3/ Best viewfinder of ANY Pentax DSLR.
4/ High-Speed-Sync with the built-in flash.
5/ 2 command dials.
6/ Very nice optional grip that doesn't make the camera too big.
7/ Will be a collector's item in the future, when the other *ist models will sell for £5 if you're lucky.

There are a few disadvantages:

1/ Slow to review images, particularly when using raw.
2/ Uses CF rather than SD, although you can use an SD to CF adapter, which is what I do.

And dont forget on the D you can save three different configurations of the custom functions, very handy if your likely to change things frequently, though you need a very good memory to remember what function is saved in which setting

With two command dials on the istD you will find your Km becomes the second body the D is perfectly capeacble of turning out A4 prints so no problems with 6mp
