Ye Olde Anciente Sigma lens has come up trumps.
The thing with manual focus is that the more you practice the better you get. Looks like you don't need much practice though.

Thank you for the comments.
I am just trying to decide, if the piggy bank ever fills up again, whether to replace the lens with a modern equivalent.
I do not know if a new version of this lens would be optically better as well as having the benefits of autofocus etc.

I doubt if you would improve on the optics. I would stick by it and spend the money on a different focal length.

If the auto focus isn't a concern i would stick with the old Sigma. The shots you got look fine . Thank you for the comments.

With my old peepers i need the AF nowadays. But as you are probably aware the latest Tamron and Sigma 70-300s are very cheap.

All three are hand held. Nos. 1 & 3 are @ 300mm and are not cropped. No. 2 is @ 135mm and is very slightly cropped.
Having to manually input the focal length for shake reduction and then having to manually focus, means that trees are o.k. to photograph, but hot air balloons and fast moving swans are not so easy
