Title Weekly Competition #199 - No Sky

Closing Date 08/05/2011
Opting Out If you'd like to enter but not keen on creating and judging the following competition you have the option to opt out. If you're selected as the winning photo simply create a report saying that you'd like Admin to take over and we'll do the rest.
Description
The last few days have been a real nuisance weather wise with very plain skies. I haven't been able to do much with it at all. This weeks competition should be an outside shot with no sky showing at all. It can be rural, urban, anything you wish - just the two rules:
1. Must be outside.
2. Have no sky anywhere in the picture.
I'm looking for images that will give a boost to my limited imagination.

Apologies for the slightly late comments but got called out by work as I was sitting down last night to do my spiel and just about to head back in again now. Heads a shed. The winner is as follows and my remarks on all will follow later. There were half a dozen here that I really liked and were almot interchangeable in first place. However, I have decided to go for Art Appreciation by thoughton.

Strong lines and excellent use of the couple as silhouettes were the things that jumped out at me. I also liked the size of the couple in the frame and the light on the statue. Mono conversion added to the power of the very stark surroundings.

Wowsers, thanks for the nod Mark, it's quite an honour given some of the great entries this round! Hmmm now I need to have a think about the next topic.

Oh yes, just for the record my photo is a full colour photo, warmed up slightly with a custom white balance. I had the benefit of a great location, and when this couple stopped to take a photo of the statue I snuck up behind them

Rather a long job this judging lark

A lot of negativity around at the moment with work and other things so I've tried to pick out what I feel to be the positive side of all the images. I've enjoyed going through them all but I suppose I lack the confidence to do a full critique. I'm great at picking fault with my own images and when I'm a bit longer in the tooth I'll no doubt be happy to pick fault with others as well. In any event in a lot of cases I know that I like an image, its just that sometimes I couldn't really tell you why.

Winner Art Appreciation by thoughton

2nd Place Kingfisher Roy Beckwith

3rd Place PULL by AxelLuther

Highly Commended

The Beautiful Game by Dr. Mhuni

European Great Grey Owl by Sandinista

No Skye by Coker

Breakdown

Two Shadows by bforbes

Nice light in the arches and I like the arch/tunnel disappears off into the distance. Placing of the figures in the frame and the way they are silhouetted adds to the impact of the image.

A Day in the Street by Darlene

A nice everyday scene. I like the positioning of the 'hard rock' lampost and the diagonal lines.

The Sky is gone but the Sun is here by ArsenAL

Rather liked this. A vibrant and rich tapestry of flowers abd I felt the image benefited from quite a deep depth of field. Lovely colour and contrasts.

abandoned by artifact

Some excellent textures in this. I also liked the colour with some good angles and lines.

Havana Street Scene by peterm23

Jings but thats a busy scene. A very claustrophobic feel to the whole thing. Never mind the aim of the competition it makes you wonder if the locals have seen the sky recently.

Feeding Frenzy by Mark Taylor

A nice capture of birds in flight and liked the idea of capturing flying birds without any sky in the picture. Nicely sharp given the speed and chaotic nature as they compete for food.

Cascade des Jarrauds by DrOrloff

Lovely Autumnal colours throught with beautiful greens and reds. I like the use of the longer exposure to soften the water as it adds to the atmosphere of the picture.

The Spirit of Ecstasy by conexus

I anticipated some images of statues and sculptures but not a bonnet mascot. An elegant figure and I liked the out of focus backdrop.

Not Till the Cows Come Home by JudithAnn

A slightly different animal shot from ther others submitted. A lovely country scene and nice to see the more traditional method of farming and the use of horses. Why are all the cows staring at you JudithAnn?

Kingfisher by Roy Beckwith

My favourite of all the nature shots and was certainly one of those vying for first place. Beautifully sharp, lovely composition, great use of dof and wonderful colour. Great detail in the 'perch' as well.
A beauty and a well deserved 2nd place.

Gothic Cottage by southerngirl

A beautiful old building with loads of character. A lovely mood which I think is helped greatly by the way that its been shot through the trees. Nice bits of light coming through as well.

Smoke Screen by Davidtrout

A great way to hide the sky. Great atmosphere and a wonderful capture. An excellent perspective - I quite like the wires framing the engine and I certainly don't think they distract from the shot. Nice rich colour and a cracking capture.

Free Dancer by geordie01
I expected a few street scenes and some portraits and liked this entry. A very sharp and very nicely timed capture. I thought the guy with his glasses and his shirt nicely tucked in was slightly incongruous somehow. That only added to the scene though. Like it.

Fall Beauty
Given the circumstances I thought this was an excellent entry. Lovely rich red colours which contrast nicely with the silver tree trunks in the background.

Water Temple by axelfilipov
A very peaceful scene with the sky being replaced by the rich trees in the background.

Fisherman by Nipper
Fishing for ducks I like the light on the water and the silhouetted figure of the fisherman. The figure is well positioned in the frame and the ducks add to the overall effectiveness of the picture. Nice atmosphere.

Poppy by GaryJohn
Nice contrasts between the red and green. Very natural colouring throughout and some pleasant light coming through the petals.

Light and Shade by Hyram
A simple image but an effective one. I like the different shades of blue dominating the right half of the image and the shadows of the cars providing a contrast on the left. Theres also some nice light coming through the tree.

Gridmarker by Dodge69
I like the use of what appears to be selective colour to highlight the various signs on the pole. The colours make the various 'markers' stand out nicely. I also like the use of the tall buildings as a sky substitute with plenty of interest in the windows and other features.

Some Grass by darkskies
Another simple shot and far better when viewed large in my opinion. Natural colours again and nice depth of field.

A Door by wist
Very good use of lines, angles, colours and textures to give this a nice abstract feel. Well spotted - simple but effective.

Cherub Bordelais by Exbeeb
I really like the perspective in this. The viewpoint is made all the more effective by the angles causing some nice shadows and highlights in the light. It also results in a nicely blurred background.

WE ARE COMING SOON by gartmove.
A very complex image and one you have to view large to see exactly how much is going on. Every time I looked at it I saw something else
Looks very sharp and at no time did I think about the sky.

A Close Knit Couple
I liked the Queens pearls but did think that perhaps she might have benefitted with longer sleeves given that its still Spring really and she is getting on a bit. Talking of age I was quite surprised at how youthful Phillip looked given that he must be at least 124. Good fun.

Rust Galore by malcolm leader
Another image that falls under what I would term as the 'texture' sub category. I rather liked rich rusty images and liked that this also had some nice lines and angles throughout.

Fossils by stevepresto
Nice line, contours and colours. Well spotted and taken and one of my favourites from the texture style of images.

No Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
I've been looking at this type of shot myself and haven't really satisfied myself with one yet. This benefits from the different angles of the two sections of roof and also the strong shadows which make the lines even stronger.

PULL by AxelLuther
Another of my favourites. Very effective processing on an already impressive image. I like the very bright area in the image as it provides a strong contrast with the dark area that the boat is emerging from. Nice timing with the oars and the boat is placed perfectly in the frame. Excellent tones throughout top it all off. 3rd place.

Flower by Kosh
A beautiful flower and again some lovely natural colour. I 've been impressed by the natural colour in all the flower/foliage type images submitted.

Face on the Bridge by jasper45
An effective mono. There are some excellent shadows on the face which make it quite a striking image. The band of darkness at the top also helps as it makes the shape of the head quite distinct.

No Sky - Cut it out by VonBatCat
Clever
And ever so slightly surreal. I think its the strong pinks contrasting the strong tones of the building and the darkness of the 'not sky'. Quite effective actually.

Even for inside there was no sky by Frogherder
Nice idea and again I like the simple colours. A nicely positioned window which sits nicely in the frame of the image.

Exploration by John Riley
One of the early entries and I have to say that it made me wonder why I wasn't doing more downward facing shots in the current conditions (as were). I was trying to work out f it was a maze at first but its a nice viewpoint for the various folk wandering aimlessly about.

Roe by arnaudcharnil
A lovely uncomplicated animal 'portrait'. A soft feel to this image with great light and subtle, yet rich, colours. Nice focus and just a lovely all round image. Liked it a lot.

River Pebbles by Father Ted
A lovely idea and a nice clear image. This works very well with some lovely light throughout the water and the different colours and contours giving it a pleasing abstract feel.

No Skye by cooker
The winner of this weeks Made me Smile award. Thinking outside the box in exemplary fashion. I'm assured that this was taken outside on the patio. I'd like to think that Skye will be back on the map in October when I visit for a week long photography (and walking) workshop

Announcement by Arekussu
Excellent. I half anticipated a flood of portrait type shots but they didn't materialise. Great passion in this and nicely composed. I liked the contrasts between the old traditional pillars and the daft modern glasses. I wondered if this would make a gritty black and white. Highly commended.

Gravehead Cross by mudge
I liked the strong traditional pattern on the cross and the tones in the picture. I think its a strong enough image for the central placement and rather liked it. A subject I might have a dabble at myself.

Bluebell by GregNal
Another lovely flower shot. I really need to get out and try some of these before they disappear.. Lovely colour throughout and very nice depth of field.

Windows by Aliengrove.
A very effective reflection/window abstract. Perfectly framed (excuse the pun) and a lovely balance to it. Colours, patterns and light are all spot on. A very nice image and another Highly Commended shot.

Lock Under Trees
A beautiful feeling of peace exudes from this shot. Lovely soft reflections and a nicely composed scene. I liked the use of the trees as a backdrop as a replacement for the sky.

The Beautiful Game by Dr. Mhuni
My favourite of the urban street stye scenes. A well composed image with the 'match' nicely highlighted in the foreground amongst the myriad of tall buildings and the jungle of aerials everywhere. Highly Commended.

European Great Grey Owl by Sandinista
A superb bird portrait. It reminded me somehow of the old Tudor portrait of Henry VIII for some reason? Don't ask me why. Superb character coming through and a wonderful look in the birds eye. Very impressed and another Highly Commended.

No 1 St Heliers St by i-Berg
A nice little close up shot. The sort of image I have been thinking of trying of late but never have the courage to post them up. I liked the composition of this and the simple tones.

Please excuse any mispellings/punctuation - I managed to slice open a finger on the inside of a computer case this morning and its one of my 'typing' fingers.

Jings - the style and depth of the tones made me think it was maybe a quadtone or the like. Perfect timing with the couple.

Thanks for the positive commentary. In all honesty I was disappointed to see how this image looked after uploading. For some reason it looks better (more vibrant colours and sharper) on my Flickr page even though I uploaded exactly the same file (albeit with a different title) to both sites.

Mark.....the question you asked..."Why are all the cows staring at you JudithAnn?"

Well....cows are kind of like that...if one looks your way, they all look your way....but besides that Mark....I was in the middle of the road that they were being hustled down. Perhaps they were thinking about how in the world, they were going to go around me!! I moved in plenty of time, plus I was using 55-200mm so I was fair bit away too.

I do love how the cow in the middle looks like he is trotting right over to see me!!

Thanks for you judging and all your work.
