Description
My niece asked me some time ago to bring my camera to her 40th birthday party bash. The event was this Saturday – a few photos may appear on the PU site. While I was happy snapping people posing for photos I felt very much out of my comfort zone taking photos as things got more animated on the dance floor as the evening wore on. I ended up with a lot of photos out of focus, wrongly exposed, and stray body parts appearing in the frame.

So this week show me how it should be done. Partygoers, the late night pub turnout, the football crowd, or any other activity that you feel fits the bill.
Only Pentax cameras - Usual weekly rules apply.

Revellers Competition - comments

Firstly, thank you for taking the time and effort to submit your image. The second point, please excuse my judging if it doesn’t suit I don’t mean to offend just to be honest in my assessment. Please feel free to critique my efforts on the subject this week.

Revellers by definition are people enjoying themselves in a noisy and lively manner. So I am looking for photos that fit the bill and obviously have technical and artistic merit.

Red light Boogie
It certainly looks people look as though they are enjoying themselves. I am not a fan of the red light effect with some people having yellow spots on them. The photo is a bit how I described my efforts with stray body parts entering the frame. I don’t see a focal point a bit of a scatter gun approach.

Avionic Carousers
I don’t know what to make of this Rodney. I didn’t expect seeing any wildlife it just shows how wrong you can be. I am sure you could have found some revellers turning out of Hooters (a very popular pub in Nottingham) most days of the week – or even inside. Having said that it is a nice crisp photo you have taken.

Say Cheese
I am sorry David I don’t think it is done like this. I don’t see any revellers and you have stray body parts in the frame. Your Paris Lunchtime photo is excellent by the way. This is not one of your better ones.

The Birthday Choir
This is excellent. You have captured the moment. I like how the children are interacting with the grown- ups. The lighting and composition is very good – I love black and white portraits. The guy on the left looks a little self-conscious – come on man join in!

A Boozy Lunch
What a pair of colourful characters? Excellent photo that fills the frame with no distraction that takes the eye away from the subject. I like it – a very good photo.

Morning after the best wedding reception ever...
It must been the two of them look absolutely drained. A great capture but enjoying themselves in a noisy and lively manner perhaps not in this shot!

Mustang Betty Jane Breaks formation
First of all I must say what a great shot. Where did you take this shot from? It is sharp and the technical ability required to achieve this is of a very high level. I just don’t see how it fits the remit unless there is some subtle connection I am missing.

Mates
Two likely lads up for a good time- a well captured image. Great colours and lighting – I like it.

Revelling in attention
She certainly is loud and proud – or is she a he? I like the colour and black and white treatment it really makes the subject jump out.

After the wedding Party
This has got a real party atmosphere. The picture has got energy and life. Great colours and action – a good action packed photo.

Alone in a Crowd
This one made me smile. Poor guy, he is definitely in need of a few drinks to loosen up. Hopefully, they will have a few songs later to liven things up. The French are good a cramming loads of people in small spaces. I attended a couscous fest in Plumieux a few years ago which had a similar feel.

There are five photos that are excellent and fit the remit - a tough decision.

Winner: A Boozy Lunch – davidtrout
Joint Second: Mates - simonmac and Birthday Choir –JudithAnn
HC’s: Revelling in attention – Stephen-s and After the wedding - noelcmn

Congrats David, lovely photo that, love the tones! Extended to Simonmac and JudithAnn, and my fellow HC, Stephen-s. Pleased as punch to get a HC in what I thought is a tough challenge. Thanks Paul for the challenge, and an appreciated judging exercise.

Good, rapid set of comments, Paul...
congrats to Mr. Trout... lovely picture that, David... no way could I find anything that came close...
the advantages of having cities within reach...
congrats, also, to the other podia and HCs....
and I liked Rodney's... Canada Geese having a fly-around are a noisy, honking bunch...
just like a crowd leaving a pub...
but you DON'T have to hang around in a city after dark....
with a very attractive, rapidly-saleable camera around your neck!!
And you can see them revelling in the joys of flight...
same with city pigeons and "fancies"... only the noise there is just the wings.

And Paul, "Alone in a crowd"... that was as good as it got... it was just a meal.
And he'd drunk his fill... of water, I noticed, so he may well have been driving.
Or he might have been deaf...
or, like me, have what is known as non-selective hearing....
the inability for the brain to tune out extraneous sounds...
even in the calm of the country, I need a parabolic microphone to focus on a particular bird call...
it is more common than is thought... and hearing aids cannot help...
so it didn't make me smile...
I feel sorry for the guy, whatever the reason he felt unable to take part!

And, as an aside, while less people seem willing to enter...
the quality of what is being posted seems higher than when I joined PUi...
more like the pix we used to see in the magazine!!
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...
"Give a thousand photographers...
the same camera, lens and scene...
and you'll always get a thousand different takes!!"
Anon.

Thanks Paul for the competition, your expert comments and for my first place. Congratulations to the other four members who you singled out for awards, I enjoyed all their pictures, particularly JudithAnn's. What a shame there weren't more entries, I felt sure this subject would tease out a bumper crop.
David

I'll be along later with the next subject.
