Description
Schools just out for summer in the UK and the coast is likely to become a popular destination, so this week I would like to see your best images taken at or of "the coast". I don't mind if its street, landscape, documentary, nature, or sport photography, I am keeping the brief open as long as your image suggests the coast...

As per normal photos should have been taken with a Pentax and the winner is expected to set and judge the next weeks competition, competition rules can be found HERE

Best of Luck.

Thank you Stephen - I'm very happy!

In anticipation of your written commentary in due course, I will post the next comp shortly to make good use of the week.

Again, some lovely shots thanks to Stephen's choice of topic. Congrats therefore to fellow podium places also.

Sorry for the delay in this, it took slightly longer to get home than anticipated. Anyway...

On the Firth of Forth
The photographer has done well to capture this image from what I would guess is a moving train through a window. I liked contrast between the older style suspension bridge and newer cable stay design. I did find the reflection caused by window present at the top of the image to be distracting once seen and suggest this could have been minimised by simply cropping the sky at the top to around the level of the cloud cover on the left.

Worbarrow Bay Dorset – davidwozhere
Some lovely detail captured in the coastline in this image, I liked the balance of coast to sea and the lead in line created by the bay. I did feel like that the sky lacked some drama (some days it just does) and maybe cropping to a letterbox would have helped.

Stormy Weather at Roker - tyronet2000
This image has bags of drama, captured in the stormy sea and the light falling on it. I like the square crop and the positioning of the lighthouse vs the breaking wave within the frame. I also felt that the drama was enhanced by the conversion to monochrome although I am not too sure if the dramatic light has been helped with just a touch too much creative dodging and burning, but all in all a cracking bit of photography.

Johanna Beach - i-Berg
I don’t think this image could be anymore right on the line of coastline if it tried! Some fantastic foreground detail in the wet rocks, lovely depth to the image with a really nice lead in to the layers of headland in the background and the icing on the cake is the dramatic evening or morning light that has illuminated the sky.

Admiring the view – mudge
Another image with some depth to it as well as a good lead in created by the bay. I like the idea of this image, the inclusion of the figure admiring the view works well, but could not help wonder which view he was admiring? The landscape or the sun bathers; who have both unfortunately obscured by a little obtrusive foreground interest.

Octopus 'fisherman' - michaelblue
An interesting and very different documentary image to the others submitted. It’s interesting in that it’s the only image recording some sort of work activity - well seen. I think I would have liked this from a different angle so I could have seen more of his facial expression, although the lighting being where it is this may have been difficult with his face being in the shade…

The Spanish Coast at Barcelona - go4IT
Another image featuring people admiring the view, although this view is quite substantial as it includes foreground vegetation the city and the sea in the distance. I liked the idea of framing the subject with the people looking at the view, but I don’t think the weather was working to your favour at the time this was taken…

Circles in the Sand - JAK
Quite a strong abstract shot this and a recent one too – always good to see! I liked the composition and the inclusion of the local wildlife which helped to give the image a sense of scale which can easily be lost with this sort of subject.

muddy camel – johnjm
It’s quite a dark image so I am guessing it’s been shot later in the day when the sun is low in the sky, which would also explain the warmth of the light.

Cornish Seascape – snakey
Fantastic sunset with dramatic light in the sky and just enough movement captured in the sea. I can almost hear the waves lapping on the sea shore, well done.

Yachts under a big sky – MarqueeMoon
Some strong directional light has been captured here. I like the idea behind the composition, keeping the horizon very low in the fame is quite a bold move, however in this case think it would have worked better if the sky had either a little more interest in it, or been a pure blue i.e. without the aircraft con trails. I think this could also work well as a square crop.

Maitland River mouth – Noelcmn
Glad you managed to get three oystercatchers it always seems to help having an odd number in the frame… I like the reflection, the depth the rocks and background add to the image. However I felt the birds could have done with being a little sharper, as they are the main subject, a bit more depth of field would have helped.

Seven Sisters - ken2390
Really like the composition, the curve of the beach has been used to take the viewer to the Seven Sisters in the background. I also like the inclusion of the people all along the beach, as it really gives the image a great sense of scale.

Homeward on an Evening Tide – drofmit
This one is all about scale and pattern. It’s quite a moody image and the slightly misty atmosphere helps to create this feeling. With such a limited colour pallet I think it could have also worked quite well as a monochrome image.

Wild Cornish Coast – MikeInDevon
Ah flowers clinging to life, whilst being battered by the elements. This image is another that has taken full advantage of the curvature of the coastline to take the viewer through the image. The spray and fret from the sea given a good sense of depth.

Some good images made it quite a difficult choice - but in the end I settled on:

1st - Johanna Beach - i-Berg
2nd - Stormy Weather at Roker - tyronet2000
3rd - Cornish Seascape – snakey
H/C - Circles in the Sand - JAK

Thanks and well done to you all for such a good range of pictures.

Thanks for an interesting competition subject Stephen, and for the comprehensive feedback! I had in mind that the view being looked at could have been on the beach! And, in fact, the obtrusive leaf was included on purpose!
Congratulations to the podium placed authors, as well as the other excellent contributions that were not quite placed.
