Weekly #394 - Dynamic Architecture Competition

Title Weekly #394 - Dynamic Architecture
Judge cvhennessy
Closing Date 01/02/2015
Opting Out If you'd like to enter but not keen on creating and judging the following competition you have the option to opt out. If you're selected as the winning photo simply create a report saying that you'd like Admin to take over and we'll do the rest.
Description
The purpose of this competition is to produce a photo of the exterior of an architectural item such as a building or bridge or monument. What I am looking for is an image that dynamically enhances the image such as a night photo, or the use of HDR or B/W or ND filters, so that its not just an image of the building but an artistic representation of it.

I liked the colours, the fact that no bits had been cut off in the image and the lack of distortion, and its different!!

When it was entered a few weeks back....
as "Blue Streak"....
in John's "The Moody Blues" weekly comp....
I thought it looked as though Redfield Fractalius had been used...
as had I in "Blue Music" for the same comp!

-pause-

But I've just looked at his gallery...
and in a comment beneath a similar one it looks like he uses Topaz...
they must be very similar!!

-another pause-

BUT not the price!!
Fwoarrr!!!
I don't think I'll be buying Topaz filters any day soon...
I'd rather buy a true macro lens!
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...

Congratulations to Mike on his striking winning entry. The disappointment at not having a full commentary and results should not be allowed to detract from his fine wining entry.

Yes I used Topaz filters, I think its a great suite of effects and I recommend them wholeheartedly - This one is called glow and it gives immense amount of control to create an effective in just an Iris or a whole image.
I also rent photoshop (in fact the whole adobe suite) and I find the two compliment each other.
I have to say though you can only add effects to a good image to get the result you are looking for.

Possibly it's a marmite image but its a winner in my book. Think it's a really striking result.

Many congrats to the winner for a very good entry. I know we all have issues with time etc but it does I feel slightly devalue the contest when no critique on all the entries is offered.

But sometimes it is the negative things that show the way forward.

Anyway many congratulation to Mike on his win.

I love a bit of controversy - it is whats art about.
In Birmingham, there is a statue called the Iron man by anthony Gormley. On the face it is a slanting loose image of a man left to rust.
It caused so much crap when it was installed, I was there just after the installation and there two old ladies walking around the statue, Their conversation went something like this;
"They call that art do they Gladys, art my arse ( maybe she didn't say arse)Art, I dont even know what is"
"I think its a man Mabel? He looks like he has just walked out of the pub" " Oh yes, I can see it now, it is a man, of sorts anyway, if it is a man he looks kind of lonely or sad"
Anyway they were there for at least 20 minutes discussing the possibilities, of what the statue might be about, how it fitted in the environment, how it might relate to Brum, it was brilliant to eavesdrop.
They went away still not sure it was art or not but I know what I thought....
By the way I hate Marmite but I love Bovril
Ps I posted the iron man (interpretation ) on the gallery page)
I did whole series of images of Brum buildings and people. Edited using both photoshop and Topaz glow to give them a common feel.
I have been lucky enough to sell 8 images as prints so far, three local Musicians are using their images on their website and facebook And Have an enquiry from two other bands who want to commision some work.and I feel good.

"Anyway they were there for at least 20 minutes discussing the possibilities, of what the statue might be about, how it fitted in the environment, how it might relate to Brum"...
yup! That IS what art is about... and I will bet that the discussion went on much longer... and broadened into a discussion on wider "art"...
and well done with the sales and commissions!!
I bet you feel good....

It would be helpful if newer members studied the rules of these competitions before entering. However its always possible for events such as illness or pressure at work can overtake a judge in the midst of his or her week in the chair. I hope all is well with Chris Hennessy who is not new to entering the weekly competitions..

You've well highlighted why we shouldn't jump to conclusions David, so many thanks for that.
Best regards, John
