A great shot, the light playing on the wall and tower contrasted against the gentle shadow is very appealing. I find the slightly out of focus ivy a bit distracting given that it is such a feature, and the image needs straightening a little bit, the tower and gateposts are leaning very slightly to the left. However both those comments are very minor and just my opinion, all in all a great shot.:D

So what lens and settings did you use for this?

You can do the same thing by in Photoshop by creating a black & white adjustment layer. Then Click on the adjustment layer, select the paint brush tool and paint round the area you want in colour. Hopefully that should work.

What a great subject, I really like the light on his hair and beard. The only thing that spoils it for me is the position of his bifocals on his right eye. That however is an extremely minor criticism, I do like this a lot.

Nice shot for all your troubles, going to watch the rut is on my "must do" tick list. I wonder if it may benefit with the branches being cropped out.
