Surely the new sonic motor lenses will HAVE to include the option of an AF coupling, otherwise they will be useless on all but the K10D? (unless you want to focus manually)
Furthermore, are these new lenses also to have power zoom function?, it seems odd that Pentax would make the K10D KAF2 compatable just for the limited availability of a few older lenses.
Or maybe theyre dual purpose contacts, for EITHER power zoom OR sonic motors

If you are talking about the whole lens line, then I am sure your fear that it will all go sonic is completely groundless.
As for the aperture ring, the only Pentax AF cameras I have used seriously have been the Z1-P, the *ist D and the K10D, all of which have hyper-manual, which provides an even faster way of going into either Av or Tv mode.
I concede that if you don't have the two wheel system the aperture ring may confer a slight advantage.

I have faith in Pentax, they have always managed to make things work in the past at least for reasonably likely lens/camera combinations, so I'm sure they'll make a sensible decision. I'm just not quite sure what that will be.
I see your point with the dual wheels and hyperprogram. My film cameras are MZ-7, MZ-50 (now sold), SFX and Z50p (bizzarly in that order, don't ask) so I've never had twin control wheels before the K10D. At the moment I still see the rear control wheel as a compromise to make the removal of aperture ring support acceptable rather than an improvement though, perhaps my impression will change.

I think you are being a bit over-dramatic, Mongoose. We are only talking about a handful of expensive lenses, not the whole lens line.
I tend to agree with your suggestion that the only lenses with SSM will be the * ones, this would make far more sense, but as yet we have had no word on how many or which lenses will be equipped with SSM, other than that the * lenses will be. Perhaps some will be available either with or without? other manufacturers do it.
Also the reason for an aperture ring on an AF lens is some of us still prefer the Aperture ring to the in body adjustment. Whenever I use my MZ cameras I always use the aperture ring. It also makes a very fast way of going from any mode at all to aperture priority.

There's "it's an inexpencive camera" and then theres "oh by the way, that brand new model you bought 6 months ago? we don't make lenses for it anymore, sorry"
It would be very unwise and dare I say it rather Canon-esq. Not a Pentax like move at all.

I suspect they wont all have them right away, since focus motor equipped lenses are unlikely to AF on the K100D and earlier cameras and that will seriously limit sales and seriously P*** off a lot of people who recently bought K100Ds as the latest model.

Ok, so if you had to limit yourselves to just one of the above which would it be?
Yeah I know, hard task!

particularly interested in the 35/2, might soon be time to retire my beloved Zeiss 35/2.4

The only thing I can't yet decide on is what to program into "User" mode. It seems like a very neat idea, I just can't figure out what I'll do with it.
So, has anyone had one of those "that will be just perfect for ......" moments with user mode?
just interested.

I have my K10D set to MTF program. Now perhaps I am being naive, but I was expecting this program to bais towards the lens best aperture, but that isn't what I'm seeing.
It seems to select wide open in 90% of situations. Initially I thought it was just that I was shooting in low light, but earlier on today it picked 1/1000th at F4.5 with the kit zoom. Now I'm sorry but the kit zoom is not at its best at F4.5, surely in that situation it ought to be biasing towards something more like F8?
am I doing something stupid here?
