Could you explain why a sync speed of 1/250 rather than 1/180 is an advantage in the studio, where presumably, virtually all the light is coming from the flash units?

I could understand why a faster sync speed might be desirable outside, lit mostly by natural light where you wanted the lens that bit wider open to reduce the depth of field, but still use fill in flash.

But I'm not clear why it would make a difference in the studio.
Just what I got used to I s'pose
I tried a couple of radio triggers which work fine on the D200 but won't work on the K10D.
IR are not good because if working in sunlight they won't fire.

Chris, while you have the camera in your hands can you check if it still has the annoying pre-flash and if so can it be turned off,
how low can you set the flash output to and is 1/180s the fastest sync setting ?

I have the K10D for travel but am still using a D200 for studio work.

Thanks in Advance

My only bugbear for the Pentax is the lack of ring flash but I am trying to work round that.
I use the Nikon twin macro flash on and off the ring mount on the D200 and have used the ring flashes before that.

Someone suggested using 2 flash guns but for me that isn't an option as the whole point of the change over from Nikon to Pentax was a weight issue.

I am looking into the Novoflex system and the Vivitar 6000AF TTL Macro Ringlight Flash (Guide No. 52'/16 m) for Pentax AF

The Vivitar is looking the best bet due to the price.

Check out the B&H site bearing in mind that anything brought into the UK will be charged tax.

The Pentax is also more weather tight than the D200

You really won't find anything better for the money.
You won't find anything to equal the K10D in price, features and flexibility. I actually have a D200 and have found it to be better than that and I only shoot in RAW.
All my files are rezzed up to around 50mb for agencies. So any jaggies really would show up and the agency would kick them out.
I have hardly picked the D200 up in the last 6 weeks or so since I got the K10D.

Ok, just to show what an old Sigma can do (non DG)
This arrived, courtesy of E-bay, yesterday morning and I took this today.
Sorry don't know how to post an image.

I was quite impressed with the anti-shake on this.
Had to change the levels a bit as it was a little dark and this is heavily cropped so you can see the detail.

If you can afford it buy a true Macro lens. The Sigma and Tamron are both good.
I have used a Sigma 105m both with Canon and Nikon and will be the proud owner of a Pentax fit in a few days to use on the K10.

Can be used with Kenko extension tubes to get really high magnification or kenko 1.5x extender to make it into a 150m. Good for butterflies in the field.

I bought the K10 to replace a D200 in the field.
The D200 is a lot heavier and so are the decent lenses.
I have found the K10 to be sharper than the D200 which does have a tendency to produce slightly soft images.
I always used RAW but have found the DNG format great.

For anyone waiting for the Sigma ring flash to come out.

SORRY !!

I spoke to Sigma UK, they say they have no intention of making a Pentax model, never did.

I know it was on the list but it isn't now.
