I could argue that correct exposure and sharp focus are equal parts of the image quality pipeline, which is why in real use I'm finding the K3 a little better I think than the K5 because the K3 seems to pretty much nail both every time requiring less PP, which I also like (Not at the moment though I am stuck indoors for another month and have no shots to PP because the of the K3, I HATE THE K3!:twisted
Now before you start along the "You should get it right in camera first time" diatribe Smeggy DON'T! Everything pretty much gets PP'd in some way or you wouldn't have Lightroom! (Actually another thing I have to thank you for, I used to use DXO but you banged on so hard about Lightroom Smeggy I tried it and the rest is history...)
K3 needs less because it's just far more accurate also, I print and you cannot tell the diifference noise wise in Print, which is what matters to me but you can print bigger with the same amount of noise, which also matters to me and gives the K3 the win in my humble opinion...
No flaming just a difference of viewing angle...

Public gets what the Public wants...
Photographers don't get what Photographers want, more's the pity...

I concur David but as I said there is no pleasing everybody, Jons choice would seem to be the best at this moment in time too for his stated purposes, unfortunately it may mean that Pentax loses another user. Pentax will eventually address the issue if it takes a bigger sensor to keep em then so be it, thats what we must have. Absolutely no use to me, having had over half a dozen of the damn things but some need it, how many users do they have to lose to other systems before they realise that the 645D is just too big a jump?

There is no pleasing everybody, which is why they need a range of cameras to suit us all.
A hi ISO monster would not suit someone like me who almost cries when he has to turn the ISO past 400!
All things considered I think the K3 is a winner but its obviously not for everyone, pity, cause your all missing out!

Worth a read?
Not on a Pentax but the technique holds true for anything really...
EVF's aside...

David Storm has very kindly uploaded some RAW files for me to play with. Unfortunately the fan on my computer is playing up again and it gets a bit warm when I do too much processing....I'm going to the UK next week and have ordered a new fan, so will finish the experiment then.

However, I have processed three files taken at ISO 6400, -2ev, all of the same scene with the same lens. It's surprised me: the K3 does indeed have more noise, negligibly, but it's very fine-grained, and after a bit of processing there is far more detail than in the K5 and K5iis shots. If I try and get rid of all the noise in the K3 file, there's not much to choose between the three cameras. However, with these ISO 6400 images processed to the point that I think they look good at 100%, and once all the images are resized to a size midway between the K3 and K5 file sizes, the K3 produces the best images imo (significantly so), with the most detail and least noise.

I'll update this for those who are interested once I've processed all the files.

As for my choice of what camera to buy next (I was planning to next week), Ricoh have thrown a spanner in the works as it seems there's some new models coming out.
Pretty much as I see it, in real use the K3 is better and not just by a bit but you need to turn off the defaults use RAW etc. I suppose some would argue that you have to "Fiddle" to get the best out of it but regardless it is better.
It's stopped me wanting a K5II (of any version) as a second body and got me looking fwd to a K60, if indeed it's real...
People need to Pony up and buy a K3, test it in the real world, I'm loving mine!
I wish I could afford two like Fletcher8!
Spend £978.00 just to test something?

ROFL!! you are a funny sometimes Jules.

For me it's all about being able to control the camera from a tablet out in the wilds, then upload the shot to the tablet do a quick edit and blog it on my website, there's a lot to this tech, that will be useful to me going forwards, as long as I can keep my head above the waves that is
I'd like to see GPS on a card too, don't see why not having pulled apart a lot of Phones with GPS in my time (Used to fix em) the aerials are getting smaller as is all the other componentry and I reckon it'll go on an SD...
So an SD FLU Card in one slot and a GPS one in the other please...
