I had one of these a long, long time ago....It is capable of very good results, but is massively heavy and not really made to the same standards as Pentax lenses. However, well worth having a try with. There are a few older manual focus lenses that are also "legendary" and these include:

Elicar 90mm Macro
Tamron 90mm Macro
Lydith 30mm
Kiron 28mm f2

You could have asked a simpler question, like what is the meaning of life....

You have listed two totally different lenses, so which is the best prompts the question "In what way?"

It depends on what you need from the lenses. However, I'm going to say that the best lens will almost certainly be a Pentax one instead of the ones you ask about.

Sue and I have made some terrific prints using Epson 890 and 1290s printers, so I'm sure the later models will produce even better results.

In A3+ printers, the 1290s is still hard to beat.

I think it's a fair deduction that I'm swapping things around a bit (again...) and all the lenses you list, George, would happily be on my list.

However, the first is likely to be the 12-24mm. I mean, how could I resist it?

Look no further than the SMC Pentax 24mm f2.8 that I am currently offering on eBay!

Otherwise, any of the AF 24mm lenses should be fine. I prefer Pentax lenses and stick to them.

The LX does not use the A setting of the lenses, so the earlier SMC Pentax and SMC Pentax-M lenses are no problem.

24mm is a fantastic focal length for architecture, landscapes, etc.

If you want the same effect on DSLRs though you will need something wider.

I've just recently picked up a very nice SMC Pentax-A 20mm f2.8. Haven't had time to check it out properly yet, but I'll let you know how it is in due course.

The 15mm I used to have in its K version, but I passed it along as I almost never used it. When the subject is right, it is an outstanding lens.

To be honest, there are lots of great Pentax lenses, and when we single them out then we are really "splitting hairs".

Well, there's lots to choose from Matt, but you might look at two very useful lenses:

SMC Pentax-A 24-50mm f4
SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f4

If you can find nice examples, they really are very good lenses.

The f1.2 has very good control of point light sources, which is useful for night time shooting. Its performance when stopped down is the equal of the other 50mm lenses.

Are you sure you've seen a 50mm f1.2 M lens - I thought they went straight from K to A series.

I agree that using A lenses will be much more convenient on the DSLRs.

I doubt if it is the same, although both lenses are I think 5 elements in four groups. The redesign for digital use only has no doubt necessitated some modification of the basic layout.
