Dear Matt. Thanks for the SCA3702 number. The Metz adapter number I listed was a copy and paste from a Metz web page. My Pentax adapters are X sync only – control. A red beam type lens is all that I've seen next to the secondary flash head on the 40MZ2. Thanks for the new link, I simply searched using what you said last time.

Matt, can you confirm then the firmware is not writing to ROM that wears out with rewrites as computer main board BIOS do and that has been well documented.

Dear Chris My DA comment is in answer to your own posting 11/09/08 where you say you 'decided to get rid of your pre-A lens'. DA I understand is post-A, but I do understand your reasoning to ditch the old that's not as compatible as the new camera blurb suggests.

Gents, highlighted above are a number of real problems with the K10D, that should not be there. Unlike Matt I'd like a firmware rewrite, to: 1/ if necessary to increase the shutter lag slightly in Hyper Manual mode only when using an old lens. 2/ stop constant refocusing of a lens in single focus mode when used in (low level) electrically dimmed lighting. But yes if a flash with a linking red beam focus system means the camera does what it was sold to do, come on Pentax how about a heavy discount on a basic flash that does the job. The discount could back off to simply a decent amount on the larger flash guns. It would show commitment to the system, 'we've got a problem but we are here to help' type stuff and OK old lens are old. A discount that showed commitment would keep me and others I'm sure in the Pentax camp!! So this digital SLR was good to hold and good to use!

Quick response today gents, I should be asleep...

Dear Matt, Looks like SCA 3000C is the Metz adaptor to use, but do any of the older ones work?
Went digging deep over the weekend and pulled out an old 40MZ2. A spot beam is to be seen...
Two problems when I bought it:
1/ just too many buttons to play with, the dials simply do the job.
2/ remember when Metz prices tumbled, well I bought it a couple of months before that happened.
But I'll follow up on your recommended SCA adapter(s)

The push to update firmware seems strong. I'm shotting RAW plus JPG with Ver: 1 and from machines we are using to communicate I learnt to avoid flashing in updates unless 'required' because it can cause a real loss of performance, this was quiet a well documented event. Look forward to reading any detail you can supply.

Did a quick [P-TTL MattMatic] search and got a mass of pages, could you provide a link for this thread?

Dear Steve Tried the links. That old KAF was odd, I remember a front lens unit wobbling all over the place BUT somehow not affecting the pics. To my reading of the K10D manual if 'offers' functions only dreamed of back then though which appear to work in exposure assessment mode but not picture taking mode.

Dear All Yep a strobing flash on a shutter half press followed by a 6+ second wait while the camera defocuses before firing the shutter is not helpful in electrically dimmed lighting conditions. Pressing other buttons offers the opportunity to miss an expression that can make the difference. Stunning people, head braces and Magnesium.... If a flash unit red spot beam is needed to let the camera work, how about a warning or better still a simple remedy! It looks like I'll need to release part of my grip of the camera, play with buttons 2 inches apart, transferring pressure between thumb and finger. Maybe carry the extra the extra weight of a flash on the camera in an environment where I need to move my other arm around to signal to people or carry a flash... Steve's got a point, maybe this is not a system camera manufacturer any more with a great pool of equipment to be bought, used and added to. Which would be a real shame! Come on Pentax!

Dear Matt Matic

1/ Red image – great! Shame I can’t use an old flash unit, but that’s covered elsewhere

2/ From what you have written I’ve little doubt you will understand why I feel a little reserved about responding here.
Can’t Pentax be persuaded to sort it and put in a firmware write that says focus then don’t focus just expose, please? IE As it says on the tin and in the manual?

3/ Sorry about the duplication

Dear ChrisA

Spotted the change of screen idea but seems bizarre it should help. Does back up someone else’s suggesting in this forum the firmware is flaky.
The problem occurred with a DA lens, which is more useable than I expected.
Going back to my old K1000 etc low level light used to be a Pentax strong point

SteveJCoe

I’ll check the links next week. Thanks
I might try a manual stop down if I’m using a tripod, with stationary targets

GolfDiesel Thanks

Dear Mannesty

My flash collection may not be fully digital compatible, but it is serious kit.

Dear Matt Matic

Is there a bug list and work around list for the K10D and can it be posted and emailed please?

Many thanks for everyone’s efforts

PS. Attempts to emails Pentax and Hoya direct have not been responded to.

Is Pentax is Serious about Digital SLRs?

My brand new K10D won’t focus in dimmed lighting. It won’t stop down my manual lens accurately after about f2.8 and you try telling people in a dim noisy place, all that flashing is the camera just focusing! If I’ve missed the updates and coverage of these troubles please tell me how to avoid these problems. But why at least wasn’t such information in the box with the camera?

Before I’ve gone out I’ve tested at home what I’m doing with the camera when I’m out. Each time I’ve gone out something new has gone wrong. At a reception the lighting got lower and lower. Taking a picture outside and pointing away from the lights the K10D worked great, point it towards the lights or try and take a picture inside on AF.S. Half press to focus the flash lights up everything for a while, the focus snaps in and people think you have taken the picture on ‘red eye’, you then continue to press to take the picture and the so called non continual focus mode goes into melt down and insists on hunting all over the place, eventually taking a pic somewhere towards infinity. That half the group might have moved off does not matter ‘cos the pic so out of focus. Hey, stay in a good mood and smile, ‘cos with the DJ pumping out his sound the group will hear less than half what your trying to say…

Use my manual lens in low light? Well 35+ years ago I would of, but its those years that mean I need the auto focus in low light. What happened to that great red light auto focus Pentax used to use?

Oh yes K mount manual lens compatible? That amazing green spotted button is great in Hyper Manual. Erm.. but try and take a picture where the aperture needs to be closed down and the smaller the needed aperture the worse the over exposure and the though of a firmware update just increasing the exposure lag is worrying!!

This is really a production camera? I’m hoping to hear I’ve got the odd duff one. A 20D got me out the mire at the reception...
