urhg.

The original question was, 'do you need a scanning service', 'what would make you jump ship?' etc.

... reaches out for the whiskey

Ha ha, no they are 'views'.
We had a discussion earlier about putting a no option in. I couldn't see any point as I'm interested in 'yes'. But it was too late to change.
Boy, this is hard work!

Thanks Gareth

My first experience of this was in 1992 with a scan from my £1000 flatbed against a Heidelberg drum scan. I never went back to the flatbed for anything serious. Apparently, little has changed in the 10 years since I went digital. The old school techniques and craft are as relevent now as ever, but now they hold more cache because people have grown up behind facile interfaces - 'do you want to scan a photo or text?'

It's absolute chalk and cheese! on the left is a noisy smudgy mess, on the right: a much cleaner, truer representation of the transparency. On the other pictures, the highlights are like from two different pictures, such is the difference. Overall, it's just a much better starting point - absolutely critical if you intend to go above A3 and not have to stand well back.

I can't give you any specs because this is really early, testing the water days and I haven't decided on the exact scanner. I'm just after a general feeling of whether to pursue this and invest in me and my experience instead of shares or something.

Wow Smeggy! That is utter nonsense.
I'll put you down as a no

I saw a big difference in detail and dynamic range Karlo, especially the highlights in this example.

Incidentally, so far, only one person has responded to this the way I was hoping - a generic, 'yes, in theory' maybe followed by the things which would interest the photographer

Rest assured, I would give full specs and examples if I go ahead. Maybe even free first go. Right now it's looking doubtful that there will be enough interest - 191 views and no responses

That does look like a good option for general archiving and finding that special shot that deserves better.
If you need to capture the original sharpness and dynamic range fully tho', there's no substitute for drum scanning.
I am not expecting to archive people's back catalogue

AH, ok. I guess this will have to be commercial at some point, but at the moment it is just an extension of my hobby; A way to pay for it. I'm just targeting Pentax users on here, because I've always been a Pentaxian and I know we still use a lot of film and like quality.
So feel free to remove at your discretion John.

Haven't got that far. This is hypothetical at this stage.
They will be very competitive in every respect, that much I can guarantee. That's the overall mission.
