It was set on AF-S, and I was generally targetting the sail or the people and then recomposing slightly. The image I posted is a crop, probably just over a 1/3 of the orginal (shot landscape).
Yeah, well this reinforces what I thought.

It's a third of the frame, so it's pushing the limits already - the slightest degree of OOF-ness and you really pay the price with an aggressive crop.

And it's focused and then recomposed, presumably with focus lock. In the time it takes to reframe and press, they've moved quite a few feet.

I think the trees are a red herring myself - they don't look particularly sharp to me.

Just looks to me (at this size) that the camera's focused on the trees
Do you really think the trees look all that sharp?

Unfortunately, if we're honest, it happens to us all now and again.
Mostly again, in my case.

How do you know the Fireball is going faster?

Not quite so hard on the wind?
Heeling more, despite the extra ballast?
Sheeted harder?
Number two must try harder?
Other?

I don't know for sure, in all honesty, but it looks like it's trying to get up on the plane, with an awful lot more weight aboard, whereas the Laser very much isn't.

Neither one is going that fast (the Fireball crew isn't out on the trapeze), but the Laser guy isn't working at all... In my Laser days, on a good day, I used to be out so far, with the bow so far out of the water, that I'd be looking under the hull through clear air. Abs of steel I had, then...

So I'm surmising (not much more than that, really) that the Fireball is catching up.

Am I right, AF?

Just got home and uploaded them, found that several are way out of focus (and sod's law it's the better photos it happened to!).
The thing is, it's not way out of focus - it's really just a bit out.

And the Laser, and even more so the Fireball, are moving towards you quite fast.

You really don't have much time between having the AF lock, and pressing the button, if you want it to stay in focus.

How much of the frame is this? It's obviously a crop, but of how much of the original? The EXIF suggests the focal length was 160mm, so you'd have had to be reasonably close to get them this size in the frame. So with a crop, the tolerance is even finer.

Then, you have the camera set up at max sharpness. Did you process a camera-sharpened JPEG by reducing for the web? Hard to say, but you might lose some definition there too.

Bit harsh I think, sure there have been a few problems but considering the capabilities of the software that's not suprising - many of us have had a trouble-free experience with CS3, sorry to hear you haven't
The only problem I had when installing CS3 was that Elements 5 stopped working. But the latter reinstalled fine, and subsequently coexisted fine.

One thing to note is that if you let the Adobe updater sit there in the background, when it notifies you that there's an update to install, you should close any open Adobe apps before letting it do its thing. Otherwise the internet updates fail.

But I'm doing fine with CS3 - never had any problems.

Good point... cheapies can be excellent. In my case the best £9 I spent was on a wrist strap.

Now never off the camera, I posted some pics of it in use here.

A coloured neutral filter? Where can I get one of those?
Almost anywhere, if you like the colour grey.

Chris, just an idea, but why not PM someone in the 'Hands on Help offered' thread https://www.pentaxuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7985?

I may be close enough for you to try some of these out, at least it won't be an expensive experiment (apart from cost of petrol and a beer!)
Very good idea. You're not too far away.. I may well take you up on that at some point. Thanks.

I can post some 100% crops later that show some of the amazing detail it picks up.
I'd be grateful if you could, especially any that show its wide-open capability.
