But I'm not really into the whole fish-eye thing, so probably best to ignore me.

At what price? I don't know, but I can't imagine you'd price it unreasonably.

(But then the current new price is rather stupid - and not that much more than the second hand value.)

There is something coming out, Just got off the phone to a local Pentax Dealer after trying to order a K20D and he said WAIT or you will kick yourself. Well what do you think??? WAIT or BUY some where else?..

We want to see Jumping Spiders jumping, not sitting around posing for you.

EDIT: It's not just us... see http://nedbunnell.blogspot.com/2008/08/re-neds-ear-redux.html
Even the President of Pentax Imaging US can't always have his way when it comes to firmware updates But it shows they do listen
In fact our biggest mistake was being sloppy and letting this "Easter egg" be discovered.
... which just forced them to include the AF adjust as a proper feature in the K20D, in order to keep the level of flak down from the user base.
To still see such 'sloppiness' as a 'mistake', rather than a blessing in disguise, seems bad to me. The subtext is that they'd rather they'd made Debug mode much harder to find (and indeed they made it much harder to get at after 1.1 - why, for heavens sake???), and then they wouldn't have had to bother putting it in as a feature in the K20D. Customers that continued to complain about their K10D not working could just be repeatedly fobbed off until they went away, as seems to be almost official policy from Pentax Service, from the experiences of it I've read.
Hopefully, I'm being over-cynical, and the majority of cameras sent in to Pentax come back promptly and perfectly fixed. But I'd take some convincing.
And why, if
the discussions about the de-bug mode actually allowed us to convince our engineers to make this a feature in the K20D
...did the engineers need convincing in the first place. Were they under the illusion that the cameras were all going out the door perfectly adjusted?
These engineers need some convincing about more things than this. Removing the option to switch off dark-frame subtraction seems an insane decision to me - unless there's a hell of a lot of noise coming off the sensor that they need to hide.
As to disassembling and rewriting - that's a definite "not possible". Without the source code that just isn't going to happen.
Shame they don't release the source, though, after a period of time. Obvious why not, though.
Going back to the original post - I'm sure the whole thing is explainable. There are others using the K10D in the circumstances described...

Coincidentally I've just bought a wide angle lens, the Sigma 10-20 & whilst 10mm offers a "different" take on things I do find that the distortion doesn't work for me most of the time.
As taken
With most of the barrelling removed in PhotoShop
You lose a tiny amount of the frame (but nowhere near as much as you lose going from 10mm to 12mm), so you wouldn't want to go right to the edge with your composition, but it's worth persevering with, I think.
