Zoom 90 compact

by Peter Elgar

Another 'Gift'Pentax from a Camera Club member is the Zoom 90 compact. It takes the 123A batteries like the 6x7Mk II and has a 38-90mm focal length zoom lens -- there is NO 'aperture' marked on it and there is NO indication what is the shutter speed being used ! There is the 'DX Coding' for film sensitivity with NO 'manual over-ride' so if I want to use outdated films of 200 ASA and downrated them I have to stick a paper label over the DX contacts on the film cassette to make it 'default' to 100ASA.
There is a 'MODE' setting where you can set the flash to fire all the time so it can be used in brighter light outdoors for fill-in and I have found it does 'balance'the ambient light with the flash well. I found when I pressed the 'MACRO'button the lens zoomed out to 90mm BUT you have to guess the right distance or photos are out of focus ! It is not really a 'Macro' setting, just 'Close-Focus'.
When the film auto re-winds you must watch the numbers counting down and unlatch the film door as it reaches '0' or the film is wound right into the cassette.
