Zombie May Beetle (graphic content)

by AxelLuther

Not my style of pictures but an impressive moment. Was on a small hike with my kids, when we saw a May beetle still running on the path but looking somehow "different" when we looked closer, we could not believe what we saw - it looked like the entire back was exploded - the whole thing was completely hollow. He could not move the rear legs anymore but was walking with the middle and front legs. No clue, what it was (the attack of other insects - ants perhaps) or a desease or something else - but this microcosmic drama was really impressive. I did not had my macro lense wth me - only a 18-250mm zoom - so this is rather a bad crop (fortunately perhaps).

Very interesting, I would guess its the result of a small bird attack, but will be in interested to see what an expert makes of it.
Kind regards David

was my first thought too - but the hole was cut so sharply - looks more like a cut and not so much a pressure demage like a bird attack would look more squeezed - my current favorit is an acid attack
