If I may I'll start with the lighting. The right side is good and even with none of those nasty shadows, but the left side is pretty awful (I did say I would be blunt). The baby's and the mother's heads have been burnt with what looks like a direct flash on the left side and has wiped away all detail and has left an awful spread of light. It almost looks like no soft box or umbrella has been used, I imagine you have but still.
If you move that light further back or turn it down or both or even positioned the light higher up this burning would be avoided.
The next thing I don't like is the pose, being blunt again, it looks like a family member has put them against a wall and gone "Cheese" with a point and shoot. It also looks like the mother has no relationship with the child whatsoever.
There are so many poses that you can do with a mother and baby. What I suggest you should do is Google "Mother and Baby photographs" in the images section of Google and take some ideas from there. There is no shame in doing that as that's how most photographers learn when they first start in portraiture photography. Do this until you build up your own style, you will be amazed how quickly this will happen.
