Flying Boat

by Lucky Lee

I popped over to IWM Duxford yesterday and, although it wasn't a 'flying day' there were a couple of planes in the air.
This flyingboat was being put through it's paces over the museum, which had been a WW1 & WW2 airbase.

I like this shot, especially the propellers and the positioning of the plane.

I agree - this is a great shot, just the right shutter speed and some good texture in the sky too!

Thanks very much lads.

The Catalina (thanks Paul, I've never had a great knowledge of planes) was approaching the runway for another flypast and I didn't even need to angle the camera, it was banking as I lined up the shot.

I only had a 70-200mm lens (I really want the Sigma 120-400mm) so this picture has been slightly cropped, not much though.

I like position of wings directed to opposite corners of the frame.

Hi Lee,
Nice shot of a Consolidated PBY Catalina.

Last time I saw one at Duxford, it was in a horrible yellow colour, and was being restored,as it wanted a lot of restoration.
I wonder if this is the same PBY?

It might well be Roscoe. They did seem to be putting her through some tight flying.

Brilliant shot, really captures the moment perfectly and has great detail in both the plane and the sky!

Cheers David. I was lucky as I'd stopped photographing the Catalina and gone inside one of the huts; when I came out it was doing a flypast right in my direction.

I like the good composition and the great sky with the nice clouds. The propellers look like the logo from a warning table of the X-rays.

Gábor - You're right, I'd not looked at them like that!
